I second the Hunter 9700 roadforce balancer, it is a great machine. However, if you browse through the dealer locator section on the Hunter website, the majority are the large car dealerships. You would expect the specialized wheel and tire shops to have these machines in the first place, but they all seems to be running crappy little balancers.

This pisses me off. I just bought a set of tires a couple of weeks ago, and the car was shaking violently at 110+. I came back to the shop to rebalance the tires twice, but the vibrations only gotten worse, although their machine showed a good balance. Took it to a shop that had a Hunter this morning, and they found one of the tires to be defective.

Such a waste of time and money. This is not the first time I have a tire problem resolved with a Hunter machine. Guess I'll be more careful choosing a tire shop now ;(. Hope they would at least honor the warranty...

It's a wheel balancer that not just spins the wheel, but also has a heavy roller applying some force to the tire to simulate the load of the real driving.

Dip - same problem with finding 9700's here in Vancouver.  Only two independant shops (1 small chain shop - Fountain Tire - and 1 tuner shop) have one in decent driving distance.  That said, the difference is night and day and well worth the extra effort.

Update…..when I hold the wheel with a normal relaxed driving position I feel nothing. When I release the wheel and leave one finger on I feel a vibration at 110-130….is this bad?

Well, not only is it different tires, but it's a new tire mounting and balancing job.  Most likely the cause is right there (unless one of the tires is out of round).  If it bugs you, keep getting it balanced until it's good enough for you.  If they say it is already "balanced" then find another shop - as Dip and I have indicated, a shop with a 9700 is (in my experiences) more likely to solve the vibration.

Vibration could be caused by a mismount. This is where the tire is not sitting properly on the wheel and is fairly common with low profile tires. What you may have to do is break the beads of the tires and reseat them. You would then also rebalance them. More often than not this will cure the problem.

Hunter 9700 is definitely a great machine, but does require a specially trained person to make sure they are using it correctly. If the machine isnt used properly, it wont help. It is a great machine and now that we have it, couldnt live without. Definitely more than 9K. What also makes this machine great is that it will put 1400lbs of road force on the tire/wheel assembly. What this does is make sure the tire beads are properly seated on the wheel. This eliminates the problem I mentioned above. What it also does is measure the high-spot of the tire and low spot of the wheel. This allows the installer to do a match mount and find the optimal position for the tire on the wheel. This will result in the best possible runout of each assembly. For those of you purchaseing a tire and wheel package from us we will include the Road Force balancing free of charge.

As for the wet capability when it comes to performance tires; keep in mind that you have to drive within the limits of the tires. If you go around a corner fast enough, any tire will break loose. That being said...loved my T1-R's in the wet.
