PS2 vs. T1-R vs. GS-D3 vs. S-03 vs. P-Zero Nero ??
« on: May 30, 2005, 01:21:46 pm »
I believe those are all max performance summer tires, however; I just want to get some ideas in terms of their performnace and treadwear.

I've heared that the Pilot PS2 is the one best performance tire all around.

I didn't really get idea on T1-R but i believe it might have similar performance toward S-03 or P-Zero Nero, am i wrong?

If possible, could you state some details on T1-R in terms of dry & wet day grip, noise, comfort, treadwear, etc compare to those MAX performance tires above? Does T1-R still keeping the rounded sidewall like last production T1-S?

It would be excellent to rate them using arrow. Thank you.

The T1-R has a stiffer sidewall then the T1-S, the T1-S is horrible, it folds over like white bread.

The Pilot PS2's are GODLY, but ummm $$$$$$$$

If I had to buy tires RIGHT now, I would be getting the T1-R's the price/performance ratio is great.

My T1-R’s are finally in…..waiting to schedule the install. The price just dropped $25/tire…..got them for $250 each installed.

I gave up waiting for T1R in 245/40/17, so I went with PS2 with the same size (still pissed with Toyo delays!!!). I only paid $100 on top of T1R price, so, relatively speaking, they were not too expensive. I am going to test them on a race track June 12th, will see how good they are... I noticed their sidewall is a bit soft. My stock RE070 had rock-solid sidewalls, so I hope steering response of PS2 is not too slow.

I've heard there is a rebate on the T1-R's right now, I can get them for $800 for the set of 4 all in but don't need tires right now :-(  I guess I could buy and store but seems silly.

The advantage of the Toyo T1-S has always been a more "comfy" ride without giving up ultimate grip. It's partly a matter of getting used to their softer feel and *trusting* them. Even though they feel a bit soft and loose, they aren't letting go. They also are a lot lighter than most other tires, making them respond very well in choppy pavement. In that respect, they work very well in a go-anywhere car like my WRX. The T1-S requires a smoother style to drive well, and doesn't respond to the antics that work well with other tires (hacks need not apply)

I'm looking forward to the T1-R as my next set but I still have a ways to go on my T1-S. I'm smitten with the overall usability of the T1-S for day to day driving. They track well and don't tramline much, and I love their progressive very girppy nature in the wet. I've driven in very severe rainstorms and they come through like a champ.

Rayt, loved my T1-S as well in the Miata.  Especially perfect compliment given the light weight.  Sure, they're not brilliant at slalom because of the slower turn-in, but as Rayt points out they don't give out in the end, just take a sec to feel like the car is pointing the right way.  Further to what Rayt said, you can't saw away at the wheel, you have to be smooth with set lines and then they're amazing.  I think the sidewall thing is way over-hyped/complained about on the T1-S.  On the flipside, not nearly enough praise went to the tire for it's light weight.  I was running a 195 width tire on 14 inch wheels on my Miata at 26-27 pounds per corner (wheel AND tire).  Hard to beat.

That said, drove a B5 S4 with S0-3's and it was very confidence inspiring.  Lots of grip on high-speed sweepers.  Didn't get a chance to try in the rain or quick transitions.

Just an example of three prices using a tire size of 205/40 x 17; Kumho MX $140, Toyo Ti-R $240, and Bridgestone S-03 $236. (Tiretrends prices).  Are the Toyo & Bridgestone worth the extra $100 per tire?

Not over the MX, the MX is a GREAT tire, although a little loud because of the tread placement on the edges.

Day 2 with my new T1-R’s….glad I never replaced my S-03’s with them again. What a wonderful tire…very soft and sticky. I had to push then to gain trust as Ray mentioned…..once found I was impressed. No harsh ride, no tramlining, and very quiet…..Well done Toyo!

I took my T1-R’s to 230 early this morning……The S0-3”s feels much better over 180….much better. Now I know why the S0-3’s have that big solid center strip in the pattern for.

So far I'm happy with my Kumho MXs, but I really don't have anything to compare them with.  I'm amazed at how much traction I get while driving in the rain, considering my Miata is V8 powered.  I did want to go with Goodyear F1s, but there was something like $80 difference in price; per tire! We'll see if the wet traction remains as the tires wear.  A fellow Miata forum member just put T1-Rs on his supercharged Miata....so far he likes them a lot.
Snowman, how stiff is the suspension on your WRX?  The suspension on my Monster Miata is very stiff, to compensate for the extra weight of the 302 Mustang motor.

Unfortunately, I cannot compare PS2 with T1R or GS-D3, but here are my first impressions of PS2 (245/40/17):

ROAD-
Very quite and comfy tires, not as noisy as RE070 or Kumho Ecsta MX.  They are almost tramline-free. VERY stable at high speed - I took them to 260 km/h (empty and straight road; my speedo might be off by 20-25 km) with no drama.

No rainy day data yet...

TRACK (Shannonville ON, full track)-
Wow, I didn't expect them to perform that good! Well, they are not an r-compound tires, but they do stick! Excellent turn-in despite their thin sidewalls and they are very predictable at limits - they squeal a bit, then you get a very gradual and controlled slide, not an abrupt one I experienced with Firestone SZ50 EP. They get greasy after 3-4 laps, no surprise here, but Kumhos used to get greasy even earlier. BTW,  Shannonville track has pretty harsh surface, it will eat any tire in no time.

Overall, they do inspire confidence; so far the best overall tires I ever had.

84 im....I have the OEM suspension. IMHO the roads around Sudbury are too rough for a stiff set-up. I keep the air pressure high for maximum grip and that makes the rise stiff enough for me.

Yesterday we had a couple of good rainstorms - time to test my PS2 in the rain! Well, I was not as impressed with their wet grip - they still handle great, but their hydro-resistance is so-so - not any better than RE070 or Ecsta MX. The breaking distance is not short and ABS kicks in pretty early. I suppose GS-D3 is a better choice for wet roads. Hey, snowman - how's T1R in the rain? Or is it still dry up there?

No rain here yet to test. I went back to the dealer today to rectify a vibration coming from the front wheels. The usual vibration felt at in 110-130 range. They had to add 10 grams to the left front and it helped. I’m still playing with air pressure to get the right “feel’ and now gone up to 48 psi. The tires still feel squishy.

Snowy, have you tried having the wheels balanced on a Hunter 9700?  Was the only thing that cured the 100 kph vibration on the Miata.

I will check if I go back….It was a new machine purchased 5 months ago….the shop owner was complaining about the $9k price tag. When I went back he got his senior man on my problem and they were surprised that I would notice a 10 gram change. I reminded them that the car was AWD and perhaps magnifies any sight imbalance.

I cured my 100 kph vibration by going 160 kph....okay, I know that sometime, somewhere, you have to slow down

I think I'll trademark this:
