My plugs are burnt.

I was telling a buddy of mine last weekend about my knocking proublem when I go 100 k/ph. I told him I have a K&N and indexed my plugs. He told me to remove the index washers. So I just did that today and found my iridiums have white stuff on them. Nouther buddy told me that they're burnt?
That I need a cooler plug? These are the orginal plugs.

Could me indexing my plugs have anything to do with my knocking?

I'm going to ask what may be a dumb question - what is indexing your plugs?

Indexing the plugs is having the gap towards the valves. Allows for a better burn of the air/fuel mixture. For the everyday driver,I very much doubt you would feel a difference.

I would think possibly the valve guide oil seals may be leaking a little bit of oil which can cause this problem. I would also check your rad for coolant level as I have seen that cause a white plug condition as well if the heads gaskets are leaking slightly. Could be a hotter set of plugs may to be of advantage to you. What model of engine is this and how many miles on it please.

In most cases white electrods on plugs are normal and the correct temp range for the vehicle.

How many miles on this motor?  You might need to go one step up in fuel octane.  Sounds like your running lean or your too advanced.  Too much air from your K and N perhaps.

I use indexing washers on 2 strokes but never have heard people use them on daily driver 4 strokes.

Barrie, It's a 2002, 4 clyinder, 2 liter, 127 hp Suzuki vitara engine. It has 95,344 km on it. Five thousand more klicks to go then I get a tune up.  

Articsteve, I indexed the plugs on my '90 honda civic and there was a remarkable difference. When I put them in and started the engine and went to the front to close the hood, the engine stoped vibrating right before my very eyes. everything became nice and smooth. So I decided to do the same for my new car. However I didn't feel any difference, nor did my fuel milage improve. The timing is done at the factory and can't be adjusted.

So! I have a package of indexing washer I don't need, Anyone want some.

Jakkm you have to remember that they are 2 different engines and both good designs but have different requirements in set up. I don't think it will hurt to do your tune up a little bit early.
