Oil Change before Storage
« on: May 28, 2005, 12:48:10 am »
Back in March you were all very helpful with advice on storing my son's car for a year. I have one more simple question.  Would it matter to change the oil before driving it the 50km to where it will be stored as opposed to changing the oil when I get to where I'm parking it? I.e., is it significant if the oil has 50km worth of contamination?

Assuming that you will be driving at highway speeds for the better part of the trip then no.  Change it first and the drive and store.  Fill tank two thirds with highest octane you can with 10% ethanol (Sunoco for example) and ad "gas saver" at the same time as the oil change.

I also agree with that type of treatment for the car. You won't hurt the car by storing it that way.

Thanks for your thoughts - I respect your opinions and will do just that then. It would have been a royal pain to do it at the storage site. Oil change in the morning and off she goes! (Already been spit and polished from head to toe!)

Just make sure that the oil level is at the right level when you park it and watch for any leaks. A piece of cardboard underneath is a good way of monitoring things too.
