This is entertaining?  Cripes, I've been trying to find tickets to the Barrie vs. Hondasalesguy fight over in the other thread.  Anybody know a scalper who has these tickets?  Rumor has it that it'll be the hottest show in town.  :-)

Man, the Honda/Toyota supporters sound an awful lot like the GM/Ford/Chrysler guys in the 1980's, and we all know how that turned out! “Cars to aspire to” ..bah humbug…

Since when have the Camry/Accord brought about radical changes in their model turnovers? These cars are all about product evolution, and aiming right at the heart of the conservative family sedan market. Anything radical and you’re just giving market share to your competitor.

I would likely have bought a 2006 Sonata over a current Camry or Accord, because in my estimation it’s as good dynamically, close enough quality wise, the previous car had pretty good quality ratings, it’s cheaper, and the sales staff were one hell of a lot more knowledgeable and less snotty than the folks at either the Toyota and Honda dealers.

Most Canadians aren’t nearly as interested in the esoteric vehicle details that seem to preoccupy some of the folks on this board Give ‘em a good car at a reasonable price and decent dealer experience and they’ll sell piles of ‘em.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. –

A big factor is how popular the Civic and Corolla are... many families start out with a Civic or Corolla and when they need something a little bigger, they naturally go to their Honda or Toyota dealership to check out their options there. They'll then check out the RAV4, Highlander, Accord and Pilot, or maybe even the Sienna and Odyssey.

Hyundai doesn't have the popular small cars to generate that kind of traffic. The Accent and Elantra and great little cars, but are nowhere close to the Echo, Corolla and Civic in terms of market share.

But I definitely agree that Hyundai is on the right track... give them 5-6 years and they could be in a very similar situation than Honda; small automaker with 8-9 very competitive vehicles with great brand recognition.

I don't think anybody is saying that Hyundai is aspiring to be a Toyota/Honda.  They want to surpass them.  Being competitors in a very saturated segment, it would be logical to target the benchmark for the cars in the midsize sedan class; that being the Camry and Accord.  Looking at the new Sonata design, that’s what it looks like Hyundai has done.  There is nothing wrong with that.  Accord/Camry sales numbers and their long term reliability have consistently been at the top or near the top year after year.  Tell me which manufacturer doesn’t want that for their own product?

Camry/Accord  products are not revolutionary, each new model has similarities to the previous generation design.  The Accord and Camry are mature products and require evolutionary changes to so that they don’t isolate their target market.  Honda and Toyota knows who buys these things and they’ve basically perfected the formula for building these things.

With that being said, the evolution is making what's good...better.  Each new release will offer better fit and finish, better interior ergonomics, better NVH, better driving dynamics, better this and better that.  Each model gets better and better with more features being offered, thus raising the bar for the rest of the carmakers.  Just because you’re sitting on the top of the sales charts doesn’t mean you can sit still and enjoy the view.  Everybody is gunning after that spot and Hyundai is a serious threat.  Do you think Hyundai wants to occupy that position?  Is anybody in a competitive market happy with 3rd place?  4th place?

I think most people here recognize that this new Sonata will sell well.  Nobody is really disputing that fact at all.  It's priced right, and it's pretty well designed.  The discussion has been about how good the Sonata is, and how well it will stack up to a newly designed Camry/Accord.  How well did Hyundai do on the little things?  Will the new Honda/Toyota be good enough in doing things right to warrant the extra bit in price?
