Drag racing in Vancouver

Vancouver had its first club sponsored drag race event at the Boundary Bay air strip near Delta.  The idea is to get racers to race at the strip and not on the street.  I'm not sure how much impact it will have on street racing, but I like the idea of a place where I can 'test out' my car in relative safety (and it's sanctioned by the RCMP).  I won't race my V8 powered Miata on the street, but I'd take it to this strip.  I did take it to another drag strip last year....and broke the rear 'U' joint on the driveshaft(shifting into 4th gear), at just over 85 mph.  Thankfully it broke at the back of the shaft and not the front.  Still, it had to be towed home.
1997 track/street Miata - I need a turbo!

They did this in Ottawa this weekend, and it was the 3rd one they had, they had 2 last year.  Sponsored by the cops, mostly for the ricers.  Usually means a free run on the strip.

85mpg in 4th?  You need shorter gears

That's the same place where I used to go Auto-X. I just joined Performance Drivers Club to race in Mission Raceway.

Glad they are doing that in your area as I am very fortunate here in London that we have 3 separate race tracks with an hour or 2 from London. I hope the young people do support it as doing it there is much safer for all of us. Even they will learn some proper safety tips by doing it correctly.

Elliot Lake has a couple of events at their airport, I’m thinking of going this year. It is sad that a City of 160k can’t organize any such event and every body drives 2 hours to a town on 6k to drag race.

I heard this was very succesful but its been axed already!!?? Is this true? Seemed so ideal, with police support, havent a clue why they would get rid of it...unless its a financial issue regarding Boundary Bay.

Apparently it is some kind of insurance/zoning issue to do with the Airport's land use charter with the city of Delta (or is it Ladner down there).  Not sure the details.

I've also heard it's been axed.
I looked into PDC, but it's on a Monday and I have to work

I heard there will be 2 more same events coming at Boundary Bay Airport. The land is owned by The Corporation of Delta.

Any track I have ever run on makes you sign a waver on the liability factor as they are not going to pay if you get hurt or damage your vehicle. I'm surprised they didn't have something like this in place to begin with. I am sure they can correct this fairly easy.

Because BMW has reserved them for test drive events.

And the old Indy track was downtown streets.  BMW has just cornered the market on the soon-to-be-condos pit area.  Going to the Mini test-drive event on that very spot this weekend.

A4_tom, I'm going for a Mini test drive this weekend.
Yes Community_plus, the Mission raceway is a good drag strip.  The Boundry Bay drags would just be another venue (more  is better).  I raced my V8 Miata at Mission last year and broke my rear drive shaft 'U' joint at just over 85 mph!  One thing I didn't like about Mission is that they wanted older cars (pre 95, I think) to run water in their rads.  That's a PITA.  Who wants to drain their rad and put in water for a few runs, and then drain the water and put the antifreeze back in?

11am Saturday.

Today's Sun had a bit on the closure.  A new group took over the lease/management of the airport last year.  They claim this type of activity is not covered under the lease so they shut it down.
