I don't get it... you list cars that sell at a similar price, and then you say that the Legacy GT isn't a competitor even though its in the similar price range? What do you mean?

Out of those, only the A3 and 9-2X offer similar versatility. The V50 isn't at all the same thing, it's a wagon! And both Acura don't fit at all the description, one's a coupe and the other's a basic sedan, not that an EL Type-S exists...

A3
A4 Avant
Golf Plus
1-Series
3-Series Wagon
V50 - for sure!
9-2X - but I don't think it's worthy
Legacy Wagon GT - a bit of a different, larger format

Well if you're including the V50, 3-Series Wagon and A4 Avant, why not the Jetta Wagon while we're at it?

I'm not sure many people will cross-shop sporty hatches with regular wagons...

What?

Do you expect only one car on their 'list' than?

Usually when you shop you look at more than one car. Even if just briefly. What else is there? I'm tempted to add a Matrix, but they're substantially less cost.

But that's the thing... the B-Class is almost in a class in its own... it's like the upscale version of the Matrix.

I can see it being compared to the 1-Series and A3, but mostly the Golf Plus because of the dimensions of the vehicle, but not a lot of people will cross-shop between VW and Mercedes, at least, I don't think so.

Oh, I'm agreeing that it's unique, it's just that people will inevitably compare it to something.

The V50 is closer to the B than a lot of cars. Sure, it's a wagon (albeit with a small hatch), but it's also from a lux brand, is very stylish, priced about the same with similar 2 engines, and it's not a huge wagon by any stretch of the imagination. Appeals to younger folks... very safe...

Volvo V30 might be a little more comparable than the V50, but I would still keep the V50 on the list as a competitor.

The V50 is dinky enough inside.

I can't imagine smaller Volvos. Really. Unless they somehow make the cabin areas bigger/more upright/bubblier.

I think there's supposed to be a longer wheel base on the V30 which should give extra room.

S40/V50 are the first vehicle landed on our shore that considered as a premium compact, Audi and Mercedes just followed with A3 SB and B-Class.

Legacy and 6 are mid-size wagons that appeal to different market.

Not everyone warms to the idea of buying European though.

Granted, the Japanese stuff isn't exactly the same concept though, but the price, room, and power overlap.

Anyone knows if the B Class shares any component with the PT Cruiser or the Neon Replacement?

Nope and nope. The Caliber doesn't share anything with A/B-Class. They are on a platform of its own with "sandwich" platform. BTW, my friend who works in Mercedes Canada said they are start taking deposit of B and R-Classes.
