The May '24' Weekend
« on: May 17, 2005, 10:05:29 am »
With the May 24 weekend coming up, who is going on a road trip to the cottage?  Any other destinations?

I'm planning to keep a low profile this weekend (as I do all holiday weekends).  My wife works all weekend, so I'll probably get caught up around the house and have a few beers in the process.

Not that anybody should need reminding but here in Ontario the OPP will be on a major blitz for anybody heading to cottage country. I got nailed last Labour Day weekend, and if you don't want to start your summer off on a downer keep 'er under 118 km/h and you will be fine...

I find it rather amusing to watch the news during the long weekends to see the yahoos caught by the OPP.  By 'yahoos', I mean people towing unsafely, or speeding excessively (220 km/hr!), etc.

Well, wife is flying over to Calgary to assist here mom with some stuff; so it's me and the dog. Plan to be around here but on Sunday, probably drive up to Mara Lake as my sister/her hubby and 2 little ones are out from Calgary at their cottage there. Think there is a CASCAR Western Series race that day also at Sunvalley Speedway near Vernon. Try to do both.

Also, the Knox Mountain Hillclimb is on for about the 35 year straight. Guess I will be busy all weekend. There's usually a car show somewhere nearby also.

I'll be "on the road" every weekend until July, and then gone for the most of July and August.  The long weekend will be spent exploring the area around Drumheller and a day at the Dino Museum.
No place I'd rather be...

I will stay home all weekend. I will work and make up time so that I can take Thursday and Friday off the following week. I like to take my time off on non-holiday weekend to avoid the traffic congestion and madness.

A friend of mine with his 5 year old son will be joining me and my son on a four day fishing trip to my mom’s cottage in Northern Ontario near Manitouwadge. mmmmmmmmmmmmWalleye.

I've got 400sq.ft. of oak flooring to put down.

I'm going to be in Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro for a meeting.  I'll give you all a full report on Yugos and other assorted eastern European vehicles upon my return.

Road trip to Edmonton for me to visit my wife's family.  I was hoping to take one of our cars there, but my wife insists on borrowing my dad's van so we can haul back baby stuff her sister has for us that we're getting for our upcoming arrival.

Hey, good point, MDX!  Not too bad if your anniversary is the only day you have to do what she says!

Well, got the new wall up in the kitchen in time for final measurements for the new kitchen cabinets and counter going in. My sister is coming in from Jolly ol' England tonight and staying for a week.
Work is short staff... again and I'm working a double on my B'day (Wed) and my reg. Thurs-Sat schedule (3-1am) and having the extended fam over for a big BBQ on Mon. (Aunt, Uncle, Parents, Sisters and their husbands & kids)
... I need a drink just thinking about it. Is it 12:00 yet??

We have now started packing for our trip to Utah for some hiking and backpacking through Zion and Canyonlands.  Other ideas are to try a little kayaking or canoeing somewhere (Lake Mead, Green River?) or driving the rest of the way to the coast of California to visit my sister (also her husband and baby) who live in San Francisco.  Since we are there we could then drop down to Montery/Big Sur for some coastal hiking and/or a little kayaking on the ocean.

Before we return home maybe a visit to either the Grand Canyon or Escalante or both!  It all depends on the weather as you don’t want to be in a slot canyon with rain coming.

The hardest part of the trip will be the drive across Iowa and Nebraska, just can’t drive fast enough (legally) as it’s so boring.

We leave Friday night so the countdown has begun.

Well, I know this is a car forum but I'm flying out to Massachusetts to pick up a 24 yr old Moto Guzzi LeMans bike and ride it home to Calgary with my bro-in-law on his 21 yr old FJ1100... should be exciting.

Likely the scaryest part of the journey will be the flight on Scare Canada... will attempt to carry on EVERYTHING to ensure it gets to Mass the same decade as I do
If you're on the plane and see a guy that looks like he's a refugee from a circus cannon, say hi... I'll appreciate the company

On a related note... anyone considered importing a 15+ yr old car from the states?  Man, from what I understand its REALLY easy.
