I like the new eclipse especially over the 2005MY.  But does anybody else think it's caboose needs some liposuction?  Then again it's curves may seduce many.

come on the eclipse has become a cruiser. what is it suppose to compete with? the solara? well it is one of the few cars in the segment which is a convertible.
If it is suppose to compete with the RSX and tiburon it will surely lose out. both out handle it and i think in this segment it is what ppl are looking for. If it is going the cruiser image though, they got both of them beat. It would be a comfortable long drive car and would have no trouble on the highway.
I simply dont understand why mitsu is going down this path

Pretty good review, I still like the look of a '99 Eclipse the best. I guess Mitsu is going after the RX8 and possibly the 350Z and the Infiniti clone. You have to admit, the new Eclipse can compete with quite a few cars. RSX, new Tiburon, RX8, 350Z, Solara, base Mustang. If its priced well, it will sell amazingly.

Another sparkling review, Trevor Hoffman is great!

In the end, the Eclipse is a car worthy of your consideration. It drives extremely well, is above average in perceived build quality, looks sensational and comes with a five-year, 100,000 km bumper to bumper warranty and ten-year 160,000 km powertrain warranty. It's a no-brainer, really. Add to that what should be a very aggressive price strategy, and the Eclipse looks destined to be a winner.

Ah, OK, Mitsu-fan, but I think you've either been out in the hot sun too long or you're the secret grandchild of the founder of Mitsubishi Motors.

Seems to me the review here says "well, it's a nice enough crusier/hiway car but real drivers will go elsewhere". Compete with the RX8 and Z350 - I don't think so, and neither does the reviewer. It does look nice and should sell to the cruiser set as opposed to the performance driver types.

You really SURE you're not on the Mitsu payroll??

By comparison, the Acura RSX is far more exciting to drive, the Mustang has a ton more grunt and the Mazda RX-8 is a unique experience with increased practicality and thrilling rear-wheel-drive dynamics.

Where the Eclipse delivers is in its styling.

Doesn't sound that great to me

If anyone should be a Mitsu fan here it's me after owning a couple of DSM models for 15 years.
That all being said though the new Eclipse does little for me. Maybe if Mitsu put the EVO drivetrain in the new body that would be enough to sway me but likely not. Like Ford and it's latest incarnation of Mustang, Mitsu should go back to its roots.

Maybe, but what are Mitsu's roots - Mitsubishi Zero planes?? Seriously, what is the long history of Mitsubishi autos - I doubt anyone knows nor cares in NA what a 1965 Mitsu "whatever" looked/drove like; if Mitsu was making autos then. Ford had a grand and revered history to draw on with the Mustang. I don't think any of the Japanese makers have that, least of all, Mitsu. Just my opinion.

If Mitsubishi makes a Eclipse Ralliart version, that should generate even more interest. But that might take away sales of the EVO.

Rick, I don't know what autos Mitsu was manufacturing in 65. My reference to their roots was only to their DSM/Eclipse/Talon models of the 90's.

Everyone seems dead against Mitsubishi, rumours of them closing and leaving or having uncompetitve cars/suv's are all I hear on this site. Canadians are slowly realizing that Mitsu's are excellent cars and a fantastic alternative to Hondas and Toyotas. Its a shame you have all written Mitsubishi off.

And by the way, I don't know how to quite that little voice in my head, sorry.

Mitsu's are a viable alternative to Kia, Hyundai, and teh General - Cars that are sold with 'value' as their primary driver... Someone needs to tell Mitsu that they're charging too much for a 'value' car
