Gasket recovery
« on: May 13, 2005, 10:50:30 am »
Hi all .. just wondering if someone could give me some advice on some gaskets. I have to do a head gasket job and was just going to purchase the head gaskets and not the kit? I am wondering if it would be OK to just get new head gaskets and then use the old gaskets with some gasket goop for the other ones. I am hoping it will be OK to do it this way.

thanks all .. Tony

Hi Taz welcome to the forum.
How about a little pertinent info first?
Like year, make, model, engine, what type of head gasket failure, (oil leak, coolant blow, overheating).
Have you done headgaskets before?
If selling and fixing cars were easy, car makers would be doing it.

Try to keep the post threads down to one.  Barrie1 has answered you on a previous thread.
Saving the other gaskets depends on their condition.  On an older engine like yours I wouldn't think the rocker cover or intake manifold gaskets could be reused unless they were recently replaced.  And besides, unless you want to stretch this job into days or weeks running back and forth to the parts store for one gasket at a time, I'd get the whole package and use the valve stem seals and guides as well.

Save money/time/frustration and get all new gaskets. For the few dollars you'll spend you'll save in time and frustration of not having to tear it apart again and replace the gaskets. Afterall the car is 21 years old.

I agree with the guys here. Get a set of new gaskets as you won't have much if any salvage from the old ones. Not a good idea to reuse them.
