New Tires Break-in
« on: May 12, 2005, 02:29:24 pm »
Just got a set of new Kumho 712 Z-rated tires a couple of days ago.  <sorry>  Now, my question is how do I break-in my new set of tires quickly because Sunday's AutoX?  I am just trying to drive semi-gently right now and not put too much stress into the tires right now to avoid premature wear.  If the tires can't be broken-in quickly, I'll just take it easy on Sunday's event.

I am not aware of new tires have to be broken in.

Since I installed new wheels and tires a month ago, I made 2 trips to Montreal (from Toronto).  The first trip I got noticable poor mileage (9.1L/100KM) and the 2nd one, the gas mileage was normal (8.0L/100KM).

Need to scrub off the tire release compound.  Slippery stuff that can cause real problems in performance driving (or spirited road driving).  Also, some people like them to "wear into" the alignment settings.  I've always heard 100 km to get rid of the tire release goo.

Wouldn't the manufactures steam/pressure wash off any "release goo!!" to save embarassing slippage and slideage(sic)amongst the great UNWASHED????

I do not know of any tire manufacturer who pressure cleans the tires - and for some pretty good reasons.

While we talk about mold release compound, tires also have anitoxidants and waxes as protection from the environment.  These will form a "scale" on the tire which will flake off - or in the case of the tread area, wear off.  This "scale" will be there even after any cleaning takes place, as the "scale" is formed over time.

While the mold release compound is on top of this "scale" and it can be quite slippery, it's really this "scale" that needs to be worn away - and that takes a some distance.  In some respects, it should be the tire dealer who should prep the tire.

Hope this helps.
