Nitrogen for tires

80% of earth's atmosphere is nitrogen, I doubt there is a significants in weight saving. Some of my friends do fill their tires with nitrogen tho. When we go out (and try to drift), the back tires are pumped up to 50 psi or more. We think nitrogen behaves better than regular air in higher pressure and hotter conditions.

I think F1 uses nitrogen, a pure gas is a lot more predictible than a combination of gases in "regular air", epecially the condition is super hot and every 1/4 of psi can make a difference in a car's behavior.

A topic that definitely gets the blood flowing amongst tire folk. I am a believer, but only drawback is there are not enough dealers offering this service. The following are a few interesting links on the topic:

http://www.mtdealer.com/t_inside.cfm?action=art_det&storyID=1207
http://www.airliquide.com/en/medias/pdf/business/gases/supply/tires_filling.pdf
http://www.trucktires.com/us_eng/library/publications/periodicals/RealAnswers/03 v8iss3/ra8.asp

It does seem to make sense, but hopefully with some good information people can form their own opinion.

Well Morty, YOU should offer it on all pre-assembled  wheel and tire packages and get yet one more step over the competition!

I looked at the links & I agree it seems like a good idea... lots of gases would do but N2 is going to be by far the cheapest and most available

When you read the info about it, really begins to make sense. We definitely have it under consideration...

Are these nitrogen filled tires designated by the green valve caps I've been seeing around lots lately?

Where would one go if a tire is down a couple of psi? At night, or in the middle of a trip?

just top up with air if you are not near your local N2 place. It will do no harm

Right. The point I forgot to mention is that for those who "care" enough to consider N2 for tires, I am sure they would be "uneasy" that all 4 tires do not have the same "pure" gas in them, not to the same degree as 4 unmatched tires in an awd car. Nevertheless, I know this type of people do exist .... And the trouble to go thru to match the air in the tires again.

I am sure they would be uneasy!   But at 2 am in an expressway gas bar in Mississipi ..... one could always replace the n2  properly later.

having an AWD car myself... I replaced all four after wrecking two 'cos the exact brand and tire model were on backorder.

For the record I am not going to fill my tires with N2 BUT when the summers are replaced next spring, IF the tire store I use offered such a thing i would at least consider it for a moment.

Would I chnage from my trusted tire store with its calibrated torque wrenches to one I din't know just for N2.. nope.

Safristi, I think it depends on the origin of the fart.  Obviously broccoli or beans will have a higher nitrogen content that fruit or salad

Not sure that this makes much difference in the bigger picture but aircraft tires are usually filled with nitrogen because it is inert. I've seen the main gear come back 75 psi higher after a hard landing, and they are already at 250 psi. Food for thought. BTW doesn't all the sulpher from those farts rot your sidewalls out Saffy?

One reason that airplane tires uses N2 is because they fly at such high attitude, temperature is way below freeze, any moisture in the tires will freeze, that will have a big effect on the tires.
