Metal Flexing noises
« on: May 10, 2005, 10:55:05 am »
My '98 CRV makes metal flexing noises from the trunk area, and its not when making turns, but the noise arises anytime when driving.

Any ideas? could it be the suspension?

Hi Gwoi_lo, Welcome to the forum.
I'm not a CRV expert but I have seen, or rather heard that the rear stabilizer links can cause such a noise which is related to minor movement of the stabilizer bar.
Check the link kits at either end of the bar and you may find that the bushings that isolate them from their mounting points are worn and need replacement.
If selling and fixing cars were easy, car makers would be doing it.

Here's something you can hear from almost any vehicle: a cracked weld. (If it happens of course)

Cracked welds do happen on occasion. Fortunately not that often as that would ruin any brands reputation for good. I think Exservice Guy may be right on this one.

Pull up the mat in the back and check the trunk area. Sway bar links can be quieted up with a can of WD40 or similar spray lube. Check it out it most likely is more annoying than a concern but it could be something more serious.

I ran across a owner of a VW the other night who has just discovered a serious crack in the bottom of his car right where the drivers seat bolts in. He has some work to do to keep it on the road safely. I also ran across a 1996 Honda accord with the right front wheel snapped off sitting waiting for a tow truck. THe owner was standing on the curb with a very long sad look on his face. I'm sure thats going to add up with a major dent in his wallet.

The VW sounds like my 1983 Mustang, the Fox bodies had a track record for cracking the floor pan where the back feet of the driver's seat bolted to the floor. I think it was 1986 when Ford put a plate between the seat and the floor to try and prevent the floors from cracking there, it worked to a limited extent.
