I have my trusty 96 Accord in for service today (253k). The SA has recomended replacement of the "ignitor", suggesting that it may fail at this higher mileage and cause the car to cut out while driving. There have been no drivability issues noted.

What is your collective opinion on this service: don't fix what ain't broke? or wait until there is actually an issue?

Is this a reasonable and/or necessary service to complete for a car at this point in its life? If so, what is a reasonable $$?

They also recomend replacement of CV boots, noting they are cracked (asking $412) as well as the oil pan gasket ($260). Any thoughts on whether these prices are reasonable?

At 253K you could probably name any component on the car and claim that it may fail.

"Ignitor" eh? It's likely time to change the ceramic briquettes as well.

I think the SA is looking for some commission numbers. You should find a independent mechanic or small shop.

No to everything. Cracks are not tears, but that is an area of concern. The boots are $25. each. Wait till you have some big time front end work to do. Simply tighten up the oil pan gasket bolts somehow.

Sterling, that was my thought exactly. Why not shove in a new engine instead? the old one I have now could blow anytime, too!

Railton, yeah. I don't know either.

AS...thanks for your thoughts. Too late on the CV boots, but I declined the other work. The CV boots have been mentioned several times now, so I figured it was time.

Perhaps I should look into a smaller shop...and stop supporting Parkway Honda's new capuccino bar (I kid you not).

Call around to find a independant shop for the CV boots as mentioned they are typically around $25 a pop, considering the cost of replacing the joints{some up to $1k to replace}, it's worth the money, unless you prefer crawling under the car everyday until they break to make sure they haven't let go. You can ruin a CV joint in wet weather in a couple of kilometers when the boots let go.
