SIMPLE DRIVER'S CAR
« on: April 20, 2005, 01:39:55 pm »
I'm wondering why none of the automakers will build us a \b[SIMPLE DRIVER’S CAR:}

The prerequisites are:
1) Powerful 4-cyl engine (160-200 hp)
2) Rear wheel drive
3) 4-seater (coupe or sedan)
4) 3-box design (conventional trunk)

I’m not saying a brand new platform, but stretch or modify an existing one…a few come to mind: Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice, Honda S-2000, or Mazda Miata. Fack….the Mazda 6 has the hump and could be fitted with a rear wheel driveline.

I would like to see a car that would offer reasonable room and comfort for us to get through our everyday chores.  Offer reasonable gas mileage combined with a powertrain and suspension that would provide us with an entertaining ride on the twisties.
There is no reason this cannot be done and be brought to market for +/- $25K.

Quick solution:

Buy the lisence to build one of the older versions of the 3-series, and sell them in that price range.

I think that if the BMW 1-Series were offered at a decent price with good power, it would come fairly close.

Strip it of the fancy options and there you have it. All 6-foot-whatever of you jammed inside

the mustang 6 cyl tries to do that, but falls short a little. Heard the SC does wonders for it though.

A Mustang 6 is close (please read the prerequisites before posting) but the rear seat is decretive. The rake of the rear glass would only allow people like Jeff to fit in…..simply not practical enough. Ford could use the platform and make a more practical sedan or coupe mated to a four. The challenge would be to keep the weight down.

i read the pre requisites, i can fit in the back so =P. it fits my hockey equipment and my cello so =p. Practical enough for me. I don't plan on having kids for a while.

i also realized its a 6 cyl. but i dont see why a 6 cyl such as sayyy the VR6 or any 6 cyl for that matter can not be seen as a simple driver's engine. most of the time it is just placed in the wrong platform.

BMW will try to offer this car. Cross your fingers for the 1-series.

Yes I agree initiald.

I'd love to have a RWD RSX-S.  Hell, even a RWD SRT-4!

My dream car would be:
6 speed man.
RWD
250+hp turbo
limited slip dif
4 seat coupe

Agree with SirA - a sensibly-priced BMW 1 series would pretty much cover it.

Volvo already built a simple drivers car. It was 4 cyl. RWD sedan and wagon years ago. They named it the 240

Ah, how simple is the driver anyway???

Seriously, the new BMW 1 Series, as already mentioned, should do it; but we'll see.

I doubt we would see the BMW 1 series starting below 30G's.

Hell we have already had Cars that fit this description. The Malibou and Mid sized Buicks with the 3.8 V6 in them. Rverybody could fit in even the tall folks and still get great driving performance and milage from them.

The Buick GN (epecially GNX) are quiet fun ... until you have to make a turn or use the brakes.
