That's true, though when we did the install, the battery had already been charged once and had been on a trickle charger ever since.  It was showing a pretty good charge when we first tried it out.

Now - it seems pretty bad at HOLDING the charge, but I don't think we cooked the regulator.

I mentioned it because I have fried a perfectly good reman alternator once.

You may still have a less than good wire, connection, fuseable link, etc.  There is a voltage drop test you can do with a voltmeter to test both the hot wire or the ground. I'm going to TO for a few days and I'm late so basiclly try and do a search but it involves going from either the positive terminal of the battery to the hot side of the alternator or the negative battery terminal to the case of the alternator with the car at about 2000 rpm and the lights on and heater fan on.  Value of .5 volts means you got a wiring problem.  Google it.

Or install a know good working battery.

I would never use a Battery from Crappy Tire as they are made by Exide and have a bad habit of leaching Battery Acid all over the Battery Box. The Batt Box will not last very long this way or any other metal that it comes in contact with. I never buy their alternators either as they are not very reliable to begin with. Almost any other make will serve you better then the Crappy Tire ones. I see alot of old Vehicles at Car shows and walk away from the ones useing this brand. Very Inferior to all of the others. I don't think they ever made a Battery that lasted the full 5 year warranty.

The one good thing about That then, is you get another New battery under another 5 year warranty. Is that right?

Yes they will replace the Battery but you don't get a full 5 years warranty on it at all. You get the remaining time left from the 1st battery only. Don't ever expect it to last the 5 years either as they won't. I have been stuck with one of these and will never buy another. Its just throwing money away. They count on you not keeping the car very long so they don't have to honour any warranty.

I need a new battery for my EL.  I was just going to hit Crappy Tire.  Where's a better place for batteries?

you can hijack a thread anytime you want. You won't be the first. Best battery/place to buy? Darned if I know. The last battery I bought was for my ride-on lawn mower and that was about 6 years ago. Guess where I bought it? Yep. Crappy Tire. I remove it and keep it in the house over winter and keep it charged up like I do my camper battery (Also from you you know where). I don't have problems with them. Just maintain them properly.
I think they are like anything else, some are good and others are not.

Myself I only use the Delco Batteries as they are sealed units. No leaching problems and I usually get around 7 to 8 years out of them as well. Most original equipment batteries are usually very good. I try to keep my vehicles original in these areas. It pays in the long run.

check your engine brackets, make sure no battery acid leaked on them.

I agree the automotive batteries from Crappy Tire have a higher than normal failure rate and do often leak.

Interstate is what I use as well.
