Even aftermarket sunroofs have drain tubes to drain water away that does get in around the seal. Unless the seal is obviously bad, I would pay more attention to the sunroof's drain system to make sure water that gets in there isn't being blocked from draining away. This is a more common reason for sunroofs to leak.

I usually do it every 6 months as you can't over do it. One coating a year even is quite good. The seals will last many extra's years because of this treatment.

Sounds like your Dad is a very smart Gentleman. GM vehicles are not for everybody but a lot of us do know how good they can be and are.
