Leaking aftermarket sunroof
« on: April 06, 2005, 12:30:40 am »
Hey, I've been having a problem with a slow leak in an aftermarket sunroof.  It's not like water rushes in or anything, but after a while in the rain it tends to drip down at times (usually not from the same place either), which can lead to a wet drivers seat in the morning.  I haven't taken too close of a look at it, but does anyone know if generally it's an easy problem to fix?

Are there universal replacement seals on the market?

Thanks for an help.

I would suggest you visit the dealer who installed this sun roof. If a new seal is required then they will know where to get it for that brand. They may even have one in stock if they have had this problem before.

Try greasing the seals with silicone grease.

Clean the surface of the sroof and the gasket first where they come into contact.  Try silacone spray as it may help too.  What Barrie said as well.

If its just the seal drying out then I would coat it with Silicone Emulsion which I buy from a GM Dealer for around $5.50. This is made for rubber seals and it rejuvenates them to the original size. I use it on My Seville's Moonroof seals and they are 21 years old now. Works really well.

Yeah, I bought the car used and have no idea where the previous owner got the sunroof installed, or if it was even in this province.

I can't really complain too much seeing as I got a fair bit of the price of the car knocked off because I had a hunch that something like this might happen. I will be sure to fully check the seals and try your other suggestions as well.

Thanks again.

No Mr T but I well remember Dam Good Products that work. This is an excellent product that really works and you just don't forget something like that. I have been useing it for about 30 years and am very impressed with the results. Apply it and give it about 3 days to soak in to the rubber. I use it before I have leaks in the car as it is superb for that as well. I'd rather fix something before it breaks.

Stir the contents up in the bottle 1st and then apply it to the seals. Leave the doors or roof or trunk open to let the stuff soak in to the rubber as long as you can. The colour change will tell you when its OK to close them. Give it about 2 to 3 days for the full effect to happen.

Barrie,
I think you mentioned before the stuff turns a chalky-white when its done. That right? If you do it outside in the sun at about 27c how long would it take? I want to do the seals on my van but I don't have a garage to keep it in.

No actually it is a chalky white coming from the bottle, and turns clear when dry. Direct Sunlight will not hurt it at all as it will help in drying the substance into the seals. Any wind noises will disapate as well as the seals all swell up. It makes quite a difference in the noise level in your vehicle as well.

OOPS! Had that backasswards. There isn't any moisture leaks of any kind, just a bit of wind noise around the front top area of the driver's door. I want to get a head start on the seals before they DO leak. I'm sure I'll find some slack time at the campsite one day maybe even next week. It's up in the middle to upper 70's in Myrtle Beach State Park now. This one's right next to the ocean.
Ahhh, three weeks to kick back and drain some cold ones down the taste tube. Mebbe do some deep sea fishin' too. All without having to wear the winter gear! Sweet!
Yeh Saffy, I know seals leak.

I know you will hear the difference in a few days after you apply it. You will be pleased with the results. I hope the Big Fish are biting and like your hook a lot.

Yeh, me too. I think I'll take one of those 1/2 day excursions out of Murrels Inlet (a few miles south of Myrtle Beach). I've done it before with a couple of other guys and we had a lot of fun.
