The miracle that is rain repellant
« on: April 03, 2005, 05:23:30 am »
I drove from Windsor to Ottawa through yesterday's rain/snow/slush monsoon. My X-Trail's AWD handled the tricky footing with ease, which was pleasing but expected. What surprised me was how incredibly well the treated windshield shed the rain, snow and the constant greasy, salty truck spray. I was passing people who evidently were struggling to see with their wipers on full blast. Meanwhile, my wipers were set on intermittant with a five-second pause. So here's to rain repellant. I think they all work pretty well. The stuff I used was Castrol AccuVision. Very impressive product.

How easy is it to apply? I've used rain-x in the past with mixed results. Tends to leave a haze that takes awhile to buff out.

Hi, MB. I've used Rain-X before and you are right. It needs to be buffed hard and it does tend to cause halos and that rainbow effect. AccuVision just needs to be sprayed on and wiped off. It doesn't smear or leave a haze. I re-apply it after every second wash.

I've used it before, and it was great while it lasted, but once part worn off, I couldn't get the rest off, making a bit of a mess of the windscreen...

I think a repellant is also available in paper form. Just wipe the windshield with it.

Bob, you can't be talking about the same stuff. When this wears off, it just isn't there any more and the rain no longer beads up and slides off in the wind. There isn't any mess.

I've used the yellow Rain-X windshield washer fluid from Crappy Tire.

When my wipers sweep, it is kind of hazy for a second or two and the wipers don't seem to wipe all the fluid (leaves miniscule dribbles) but I still like it because I now drive in the rain without using the wipers much at all. Little bit of entertainment seeing the beads travel up the windshield.

I've tried most of the rain repellants. RainX is in the middle, but the best (and by far the most expensive) is still STP VisionBlade. Accuvision wore out the fastest for me. I threw my bottle away.

Visionblade lasts many months, not weeks. I put some on the PREVIOUS spring and it's still working for me, through a whole winter. Most of the other ones will wear out partway through the winter

Rayt, of course AccuVision wore out the fastest. It's only good for two washings, but you can reapply it in about one minute, even in the rain. I wish you'd given your unwanted bottle to me.

yes, it's overpriced at Crappy tire, but it did go on sale a few times. I stocked up then.
