Orbital wax polisher question
« on: March 31, 2005, 04:12:54 pm »
I would like to know what you guys would recommend for car polishers.

The available car polishers from CT being contemplated are from Simoniz: cordless 6-inch or regular 10-inch.
The vehicle intended to be used on is of CR-V or Highlander type, so I am trying to take the overall surface quantity into account.

Any idea?

Two words - Porter Cable, and you can buy it at Crappy Tire.

Check out their website too for more info.

Pass on the buffer.  They quality of the compounds avail. are very good and as long as you only do a small section at a time the job will go quickly.
I use Mequires, from CTC.  The No 1 polish works very well at removing the cloudy haze(dirt) from the paints surface.  It actually takes longer to use a buffer than by hand.  Wipe it on with a bit of elbow grease and remove right away with a big old soft towel.  I did my whole car in about 30 mins and I didn't spend hours afterward cleaning off wheel spray which you'll get if you use a wheel.  Been there done that, not again.
I miss my motorcycle!

Eric with the proper tool you can get some amazing results, the shine I can get from a PC cannot be done by hand.

Porter Cable == Awesome.

I might jump onto the PC bandwagon this summer too.  I have been doing the hand jobs for years.  :-)

Thanks for the tips. What about speed and size, do they matter???? Porter Cable looks right but the price isn't yet reachable, maybe at the end of the summer.

The PC uses 6" pads I find anything larger and it's a pain.  Speed is adjustable on the PC.

Lsmeteor if you want to try a less expensive one, I can send you mine for like $20.  I paid $50 for it + pads and stuff I used it like 10 times and liked it but when I bought the PC it was all over.

The one I have is black and decker and is not bad, but no pc for sure.

I'm with James on this one. The Porter Cable 7424 Dual Action Polisher can't be beat - especially for swirls and other minor damage created by winter.

Pick up a velcro plate and good pads. Spray can be avoided by putting polish on the pad and mixing on the surface before turning the polisher on.

Okay, I've got to go down to Crappy Tire and look at this Porter Cable polisher.  I've got a Crappy Tire cheapo 'et al' electric polisher and, quiet frankly, it is worthless.

Porter Cable 7424...there is no substitute. A serious tool for serious shine.

There is no looking back after you go with the Porter Cable. I do a full regiment every spring (full clay, paint clean, polish/glaze, wax), and the results using the PC is way better than any hand application I've done in the past.

Hi Ho All,
Did anyone want to mention a few things about burning the finish, stripping paint, the skills needed when working on body creases and edges, the differences between polishes and waxes, what our original inquirer is trying to do, (refinish an older car or protect a newer one)?  Did anyone want to admit to their first time with a polisher?  If not, just give us your locale and we'll research a good paint and body shop for you.
If selling and fixing cars were easy, car makers would be doing it.

It's not rocket science but you have to be carefull.  The PC can only do major harm if you don't have a clean surface to start or you sit on high speed in one spot for a long time.

I get EXCELLENT results with the PC, what I managed to do to my subaru was impressive the scratches on the hood were major and I took them down to no longer visible it was great.

I did my S2000 before i put it away for the winter, I'll probably do it again come some warmer weather, but it doesn't require a complete strip again, but maybe another wax job.

The wax/polish/cleaner you use makes a large difference as well.

Using the Porter Cable is pretty much foolproof if you follow the directions, and use the right pads and products. Look at the link posted by Crolly, it is very good.
