92 Lumina stalling

(1/1)

parasound:
I have this 92 Lumina, it runs like a dream, 240K. Runs and rides like brand new. After the car is warm, say after you pull off the highway, and then stop at a light, the car surges (rpms go up and down) and then it will sometimes stall. Ideas?

ArticSteve:
Idle control motor would be a suspect.

Exserviceguy:
Hi Parasound,
Hard to be sure, but it sounds a lot like an egr valve is sticking open and when the engine idles down at the stop light, the resulting vacuum leak causes the erratic idle and then stall.  With age the underside of these valves get pretty badly carboned up.  To test the theory, when the vehicle is idling nicely, disconnect the valve and plug off the vacuum line, (if it has one - electronic GM types do not) and take a drive.  If the stalling goes away, problem is located.
