When I bought my Volvo S60, the dealer (McMillan & Saunders Volvo) didn't treat me even remotely like that.

They asked no questions about me, apart from when they saw my temporary licence and asked if I was new in Canada (which was kind of obvious from my British accent).

When I found out the particular used car I wanted was sold, they showed me around the others that they had. When I seemed interested in one, the salesman immediately asked me to take it for a test drive, I didn't even have to mention it.

The thing that impressed me was that I was a young guy, obviously with poor credit rating since I told them I just moved to Canada, and yet all the way through their dealing with me they treated me with the full respect due to a serious prospective buyer. They never questioned or doubted my ability to pay any price and were rewarded 2 weeks later with $36,000 in cash.

With independent dealers owning these franchises, the level of service will vary greatly from dealership to dealership.  I don't think that my experience is any indication of what Volvo Canada preaches to these dealers, and I expect that it would be difficult to control them all, but it can be done and corporate head office should care that these incidents do occur.  My feeling is that it is up to the franchise owners to control his/her staff and provide the level of service he/she believes is adequate to help bolster the reputation of the dealer name.

That’s terrible MD…..I was treated much different at Erin Mills Volvo and was offered an opportunity to check out a V70R…..but I declined. I would compose a nice letter of disappointment to Volvo Canada….they need to know about this.

My bow tie high school buddy back in Manitouwadge…. who dumped GM and has been driving a TL for the last three years just got a brand new MDX……I would stick with Acura.

Too bad there isn't an independent dealership rating service. Maybe a JD Empower and associates. It would save alot of time and aggravation.

But when you are the only Volvo dealer in town and you call yourself Anglo Canadian Motors...

MDX,

If all else fails, why not drive out to Vancouver? I purchased my Subaru from Don Docksteader Volvo/Subaru which I believe is the oldest Volvo Dealer in the county. They treated me very well and I have recommended them to others (who did purchase from them). Definitely contact Volvo Canada about your experience but I think the blame lies mainly with the individual salesperson, not the dealership. The owner may not even know about this person's behavior. Don't count out Volvo because of one jerk. If you eventually purchase a V70R from another dealership, make sure you drop buy a pay him a visit.

Davidm, I think you are from Vancouver. If so, you are probably talking about Docksteader? Regarding Acura, a friend of mine just purchased a nearly new Acura CL-S from Burrard Acura and he was treated very professionally.

I am surprised to hear of a dealership useing that name as to me there is a Racist smell to it. There certainly was in their behavior as well in my book. Volvo does build a well made car but they don't need BS like this to sell their products at all.

It's not a name I would use, but I fail to see any racist element to it Barrie?

Perhaps the owners came from the UK and are incorporating their heritage into the name of the company...or they sell (or used to sell) British cars. Who knows, but either seems reasonable and should not warrant criticism.

Now, whether this sales rep allowed his own preconceptions and prejudice to affect his work remains to be seen, but from MD’s description, it can’t be ruled out.

I believe the name goes back to their earlier days. I lived in Edmonton in the early 60s and again in the late 70s, and IIRC the dealership sold imported UK cars like Minis, MGs, Triumphs, etc. It may also have handled Fiats at one time. It is in no way a racist name and we are carrying political correctness way too far if anyone thinks that is the case. Maybe a little thinking before posting would be in order.
Incidently, it always was a poor dealership AFAIK.

They may have sold English cars, but thats not relevant to the present time. The very fact that a poster has found it abnormal should alert us to the fact that others might feel the same way. It is not upto any single person to decide when the extent of political correctness has been breached. In any case, its not upto the offenders but the offended to decide! Change the name of the agency to represent any other population group. Unless it has a piece of history that is common knowledge, it will be difficult to justify a name that does not blend into the mainstream. I'd suggest either to remain politically correct consistently or shed all pretentions.

Sheesh!  You'd think it had the "N" word in the name the way some of you guys are going on.  "Anglo" is a suffix referring to "England" and things "English".  Quit wringing your hands about it and move on.  Be outraged about their snobbish treatment of MD, but get over the name.  It's just a name.

I am in agreement about the name.  It's just a name.  Nothing more into it.  I have sent the appropriate messages to the owner of Anglo Canadian Motors as well as Volvo Canada.  Let's see what come's back.

Truth be told, I've really lost interest in the Volvo right now.

The "Angles" invaded Britain in the 5th/6th century, coming from the Jutland Peninsula, so are Danish/German. They had close ties to the Saxons, also from the same region. Now the term "Anglo" means a connection with England (usually very friendly), how this can be seen as racist is beyond me. Serniter get off your high horse...

I'd say the service is more important to MD than the name...

These guys sell Jaguars for gods sake. They've sold Jaguar for years. Part of their logo is the Union Jack. Get the connection to the name Anglo-Canadian?

Anyone claiming that the name of this dealership is somehow offensive or racist is merely highlighting their own ignorance.\

This thread has taken on a clearly idiotic tone with this talk of racism.
