Hey Oversteer, that's great you love the Hakka's. I've never heard of Nokian tires until a guy I used to date (who's a mechanic) told me about them and I also heard about them on a car show.  Wow, 7 yrs. is amazing!  You sure got your money's worth.

Hey Tenpenny, I loved my Artic Alpins for the first 2 yrs. Then in the 3rd. year, I noticed the traction on snow wasn't as good.  This is the 4th. year I've had them and it did it's job, but not as good as the first 2 yrs. So that's why I'm going to replace them next winter.  I do love Michelin tires and had them all the time, all seasons and winters, but I think this year, I'm going to gamble and try different names.  Like Toyos for the summer and the Nokians for winter.

Lucky I got 4 yrs out of them. And they still had better traction than the brand new all season Toyo's on my father's Impreza! I was a bad girl and decided to "test" them out. heehee

My winter tires stay on my Tercel all year. I may put 2000 kms form April to September on it so I don’t think its worth the expense…..its not like I drive over 100 in it anyways.

That's very low kms. Do you store your Subaru?

I drive it sparingly in the winter…….next winter will be Rot Ro’s forth and will see more duty. The Turcel will remain in the family to keep my insurance rates down.  

A new concept for Ontario drivers……buy a $1000 beater and insure it as your primary driver. The Turcel has lowered my total automobile insurance bill by $800/yr.

But what happens when they realize that your tercel really isn't your primary vehicle?

Good luck in trying to prove that. They would have to be suspicious of that fact then launch an investigation….there are much bigger fish to fry.

A cavalier attitude towards driving at 140kmh with snow tires on in busy traffic makes you a "loose cannon"..what is your insurance company on you for? Hmmm speeding perhaps?

If the flow of traffic is 120kms and you are doing 140, do you understand the odds that you will crash are many times higher? Do you care? Go ask an OPP officer to give you the run down on Hondas/ Integras that hit poles and bridge abutments each weekend and then look at the cause;"excessive speed".

You will be overdriving those snows at 120, so think about drifting into a pole at 140 as you try to steer around a stalled '85 Pony on the 401.

I’m not stupid enough to drive my Tercel at 140 kph in any condition with or without snow tires…..The fact is it can’t go that fast. I don’t live in the GTA so I do not go on 400 series highways. I drive it in winter only to and from work on highways with an 80 kph speed limit. Think and read the previous posts before you type.

Snowy, yes I pay a lot less on my insurance by having 2 cars, although not $800 less.  I save probably $200 a year.  Which means I save nothing as it's $75 a year for the plate, and then I have to get the e-test, and actually fix my leaky exhaust

Speed ratings are very conservative. The max speed they are rated for is determined by running a fully loaded tire (max carrying capacity) at the rated speed for a sustained time. The real enemy is heat from the flexing sidewall. Now that doesn't mean I condone driving 160km/h on a Q rated tire. The handling characteristics would make that type of speed in a Q tire a white knuckle affair.

They don't need to prove anything.  They void your policy and then you would need to launch an action against them.  Folks try this all the time and the insurance companies counter with a policy void.

In addition, since the companies are essentially a big monopoly and share all customer info they will black ball you and send you to the high risk pool.
