Spark Plugs in my Neon??
« on: March 23, 2005, 03:33:06 pm »
Not sure if this is the right room to be posting this too, but I'm wondering if anyone out there has upgraded the plugs/wires in their Neon?  I have a 2001 R/T, and tried some Bosch Platinum 4s, which worked great, for about 8,000 kms, then fried.  Since then, I've heard that Bosch is not the best brand for Chrysler product.  Any ideas???

I don't know about that but my son has a 2000 neon used as a winter beater now and has changed the plugs once in a little over 120k kms. But he replaced the old ones with whatever type the OEM were, and hasn't had any problems with the plugs.

I change the plugs in my Honda every 2nd summer no matter the milage.  I use NGK plugs with the single platinum tip.  I use OEM HT leads and a liberal dose of dielectric grease on all connections.

As long as the plug fits it will work.  On that note I would not use Champion plugs or AC Delco in my Honda.  Bosch makes a good plug, no doubt but I would stick with a basic design.  One big kernal of voltage is better than 4 smaller versions.  Besides, what is the point of that?  Motorcycles that rev up to 15000rpm use simple single electrode tipped plugs.  Good quality parts are better for your car in the long run, save the gimmicks for someone else.
I miss my motorcycle!

"Bosch Platinum 4s, which worked great, for about 8,000 kms, then fried."

If those plugs "fried" you got problems.  What did they look like?

You need a high capacity ignition to fire the platinum 4s properly and to get a benefit.

Jamie's right Chrysler has used Champion since the 30's, stick with OEM plugs to avoid problems. Saturns are notorious for misfiring with Bosch plugs as well.

Thanks for all the posts! As for what the plugs looked like, it was just one of them, that was black all over the nice white part of the tip.  (You can tell, I'm a real gearhead, so excuse my use of technical jargon)
Champions got put back in, and they've been fine for the last 40,000kms.  It's just that while I had the Bosch's in there, I had a little more oomph on take-off, and I was getting stellar mileage on the highway.  I'm just looking for an upgraded plug that will still work with my car.  Does Champion offer a performance plug?
I've also heard about Saturns and Bosch's not mixing, but a few people have said NGK's would work -- for my car and the Saturns.  I dunno.....I think the verdict is, I'll stick to Champion, or order some uppity plugs from Mopar.

I have been useing the AC Delco plugs for all makes and have found them to run very well in all engines. They burn hotter then most of the plugs on the market and good for up to 100,000 miles before replacement. I would check the spark plug wire to that one cylinder to make sure it is conducting the power correctly as well. A bad wire will do what you describe.

Sharky; you need an ignition that can fire "performance" plugs.  That black stuff on your plug means it wasn't firing efficently.

AC delco for GM, Autolite for Fords, Champs for most Chryslers, NGK for Japanese and Germany cars, Bosch for Euro cars; generally speaking.

Spark Plugs are designed to run at certain heat ranges which  make the engine run efficeintly. I try to run as hot a spark as I can to get the most out of my engines. You need a good hot spark to operate any plug so boost your coil output if you can. There is a difference on performance and fuel milage as well. Heavier Spark Plug wires can pay you back as well.

Interestingly enough, I found out that when I had the burnt out Bosch's replaced, the wires were done as well...kinda forgot about that.  So, if I want to upgrade, I better be buying new wires too.
Good tip.  (No pun intented?  groan...)
