Need new Summer tires
« on: March 23, 2005, 12:07:58 pm »
Hi everyone,

I'm new here.  I need some help.  I'm looking for an all season high performance tire for my Integra. I called a few stores and they recommended the Toyo TPT or Yokohama ES100. But I was thinking of getting the Toyo T1R. Are these tires too high performance for my car? I'm looking for a tire that has great grip, esp. when cornering, good in the rain and not as stiff.  I'm not too concerned about tread life because I change over to snows in the winter.  Can someone please help?

Thanks.

When you say you're looking for an all season high performance tire, do you mean summer tire?  If you change over to snows in the winter you don't need an all seasons tire.  Yokohama ES100s are a nice tire, as is the Kumho MXs.  I run Kumhos on my V8 powered Miata and so far I'm very happy them them.  The T1R is probably a great handling tire, but it's more money than the ES100s and MXs. For example, in a 195/55 x 15 (not sure if this is the size of your tire) the T1Rs are $177 each, the ES100s are $124.50 each-Kumho doesn't make the MX in that size).  Unless you're a 'canyon carver' I don't think you'd noticed the difference in handling, although the T1Rs may be better in the rain.  I purchased the Kumhs MXs after reading a lot of positive posts on a Miata forum.  The icing on the cake was that Tiretrends had them on sale for an excellent price.

The Yoko ES100 is excellent value for the money, great grip and excellent in the rain.  They are "Summer Tires" though, not all-season.  $600 tax in, set of 4, mounted for 205/60/15.  They do wear fast if you push them, but that's the same for all performance tires.

the T1-R is an ultra high performance tire, about as grippy as you can get.

A step down is the ES-100, about 85% as grippy (not an exact number, but you get the idea)

There are budget choices that are better than the ES-100, like the Kumho MX, or Falken 451 depending on available sizes.

Hey Guys,

Thanks for all your input. The reason why I'm looking for an all season high performance tire is because it rains alot here and I need the wet traction. I've had friends that purchased summer tires and wiped out in the rain, so I don't want that happening to me since I'm abit of an aggressive driver.  I know the ES100's are alot cheaper, but I've read lot of mixed reviews on those tires, good and bad. I guess it depends on what you're looking for.  I only read about the Toyo T1R on their website but haven't read alot of reviews on them because they're brand new. So T1R or ES100??

The T1-R replaces the T1-S, which was one of the top tires for rain traction, and the new one is an evolution of that design.

Certainly, I can recommend them just because I'm a T1-S fan....those tires were great street tires, very grippy, comfortable ride, and awesome wet grip.

Initial reviews for the T1-R seem to indicate they are every bit as good as the T1-S were.

If you're bent on getting the best rain grip, you are picking one of the best. I'd certainly pick the T1-R over the ES-100 myself. The reviews of the ES-100 are a bit mixed. Aggressive drivers would be better choosing the T1-R

I just want to reiterate one more time, both T1R and ES100 are "Summer" tires, not "All Season" tires, which you said is what you're looking for twice.

That being said, I don't agree with your impression of "Summer" tires being inferior to "All Season" tires for wet traction in rain.  Both of these tires carry a "AA" rating for wet traction.  In fact, you won't be seeing many summer tires that don't have that rating.  While it's the other way around for all season tires, most only have "A" for wet traction.

T1-S was superb in the rain out west (we know our rain).  My Falken 451's are good, but not as good as these true ulta-performance tires.  Rayt's estimate of 85% seems about right too me.  If I was pushing it in the rain (which I used to in the Miata) I would definitely be looking at a T1-S (or now T1-R).

All-seasons are bad in both seasons - don't get me going on my bad experiences with "high performance" all-seasons in the wet (Nitto NT-450, Dunlop SP4000 & SP5000, Pirelli P6).  All junk compared to even the 451.

It all depends on your driving style.

If you are an agressive driver, you would want pure summer tires but they won't last too long.  Otherwise, buy all-season tires.

Thanks guys.  I think I'm leaning more towards the T1R's because I am an aggressive driver. When I called the tire guys, I guess they assumed I wanted summer tires. One of them suggested the Toyo TPT, but I want a V rated tired. My family have the Toyo TPT on their Impreza and it's H rated, so I'm assuming the TPT's are H rated.  As long as I have pretty good traction in the rain, a not so stiff ride, then I'll go for the T1R's. But ofcourse more importantly, great grip when I put the pedal to the metal!

Hello Susan_t,

did you get the T1R's?

Since you are in Toronto, you may want to call Steelcase Tire for a price.   I've never found a lower price anywhere in the GTA.  The price they quote includes mounting, balancing and installation.   I'm just a happy customer who has bought many sets of tires from them.

Don't forget to call try www.tiremaxx.ca

Their prices are really great but their service is better than anyone else in Toronto.

Hi,

I had a set of ES100 (225/40/18) for two years on my Beetle, and although they gripped fairly well, they did wear unevenly and I am now replacing them. I did push them (I have an Eibach Pro Plus suspension set up on the Beetle). As far as noise goes, I didn't really notice it, but some of my "upscale" friends commented on the noise.

I have a set of Toyo T1R's on order to replace them, it sounds like the back order is at least 1 month....

I find that TireWorks in Mississauga is pretty good place to get performance tires and one of the best places to get your tires balanced.

Hi,

The ES100's are not meant for driving in anything white and fluffy.  The snow packs into the tread and does not clear.  There are no sipes.....  I think the all season rating only applies in Vancouver...

I always change to Blizzaks in November....

I had ES100 on my Honda Prelude a few years ago.

They had good grip but after about 10K KM, I noticed that they became very noisy and worn unevenly.  I would not buy these tires again.

If I am in the market for summer tires, T1-R is the way for me to go.
