Flat spots when sitting
« on: March 21, 2005, 10:01:45 pm »
I've got a new set of Kumho ECSTA MX 215x40x17s on my Monster Miata (from TireTrends).  If the car sits for a week or so it vibrates like the tires have a flat spot, for about 1/2 km.  After that they're okay.  Is this common?  I've never had this problem before, but then again, I've never run a 40 series tire before (if that matters).

What is the temperature like? With the newer performance tires they have a nylon cap to protect the belts from impact. This a great feature, however, they generally do not like cold temperatures and can distort. Usually just lasts a short while until the tire heats up. Not common, but not unusual with this type of tire construction.

Flat spotting is very sensitive to inflation pressure.  So what pressures are you running and what does the placard says for tire size and inflation?

I'll have to recheck the tire pressure.  After having the car sit for only one night, there was no 'thump, thump, thump as I drove away.
