High Performance tires
« on: March 19, 2005, 11:49:49 am »
I need to buy new rear tires for my Boxter S.

I understand that the recommended tire size is 265/35 ZR 18.  The "Z" supposedly indicates a tire which may be driven at speeds exceeding 149 mph.  Since I am never going to drive that fast, could I replace these tires with VR tires ?  I read that speed ratings should not be mixed - is that true for tire pairs, or all four ?  Thanks for any comments .

Please ignore, I have my answer - the advice is not to mismatch speed ratings.

Not only that, but Porsche recommends using ONLY matched tires, which they conveniently have the tire manufacturers label with an "N" number (N0, N1, N2, etc.)  That way the vehicle will behave exactly like Porsche wants it to.

Hope this helps.

My turn……I need new summer tires for Rut Ro. I ran on Bridgestone S03 PP 225/45 R17’s for the last two summers and was pleased with the performance. But….at $400 a pop I was wondering if any thing could match the performance at a better price….is there an opportunity to save $100 each and not compromise grip?

I noticed that TireTrends has them for $306.  They also carry Kumho ECSTA MXs.  I just installed a set on my Monster Miata. (I put 215x40x17s all the way around, but next time I'll go with something a bit wider/taller, like a 225/45, because traction is always a problem with a V8 in a Miata) I've only put around 300 km on them, but so far so good.  From what I've read, Kumho ECSTA MXs seem to have a very good rating.  By the way, they sell for $214.37 (Tiretrends).  Now, are they as good as the S03s?

Another interesting tire is the new Toyo Proxes T1-R.  225/45s are $250 each.

Hello!......Is anybody out there?

Anyways I have started to look at Falkens. Specifically the 245/45ZR17  Azenis Sport or  FK-451. Any comments?

hey snowy....

I'm gonna give the new Toyo T1-R a try...very curious about these.

The Azenis is an great slalom tire but it's pretty harsh, heavy, and so-so in the wet. I'm not a fan of these for everyday driving.

If you want to save money, the Kumho MX's are good street tire. A bit softer, quieter, and lighter than the Azenis. I recommend these over the two Falkens you listed.

That's a good price.  I have the 451s on the bimmer - good for a budget performance tire, but not in T1-S (and I assume T1-R) territory, particularly in the wet.  Given what you have put into the car Snowy I think you have to give her a nice set of shoes (picturing favourite track star in gum boots ...)

I am here.....MX has been doing really well. We get a number of reports about this tire being used for AutoX and it seems to be well liked. Perhaps not as stiff as the S-03, but offers very good performance levels. Throw in the price comparison and it is a good option.

So far I like the T1-R. I have been too busy of late to take them out in the wet. So, that test is yet to be done. I am impressed with the dry capability and still surprised how quiet they are. We will need to get some more tires out there, so we can get some impartial feedback.

Gee Morty……..I could be a test mule for you. I will send you my OZ Racing wheels and you can mount the T1-R’s right on them. I will test them and send you a report by the end of summer…….Wait!....because I’m such a nice guy I will do it for free!

I've put FK451 on my Miata last summer. I was pleasently surprised by their performance level when I autocross. They do get noisy and do not appear to stay balanced for too long. I won't be using them for autocross anymore as I have a set of Kumho V710 coming for the season, the FK451 will only be used for rainy days at the track and daily driving.

Thanks Crolly for the site compliments. The new look has been a long time coming. We are continuing to make it better and are now showing tire availability. We are working on a few other improvements, but they arent quite ready yet.

Snowman...we definitely want some input. I cant give you free tires but I will give you this pic for your dreams....
Toyo T1-R
Let us know how they run in REM!

Runwhatyabrung...we have had good success with the 451, but autox is more than the envelope for this tire. We have had good comments on the Kumho MX in the autox dept. but nothing like the V710. You should enjoy the V710 and we would love to hear your thoughts, so keep us posted.

Fack…..the 225 45 R17’s won’t be available until April 18th..and that is in Toronto….I can’t wait that long…what to do? I might have to run my S-03’s to destruction until then….almost four weeks!...big demand I hear.

Motherfuc…..My T1-R’s that were to be here this past Monday are now on back order to May 2’nd…..Jules is not pleased. I will have to drive with less expression during wet conditions  with my ailing S-03’s.
