Domtam I have to agree with Cphansen, a Legacy 2.5i is your best bet out there.  Japanese, safe, reliable, well priced, high resale, great looks(rich).

5 stars for Smainy for being so like-minded.  He likes Subarus, but for some reason bought an X-Trail, just like me.

If you ski, I'll have to go back and give every one of your previous posts 5 stars as well.

Saab 9-5, sedan or wagon, used, 2-3 years old, with balance 80,000 km / 4 year warranty, very safe, comfortable, roomy, between $25 and 30 K from a dealer, less in private sale.  Among the very best of European cars for reliability, according to Consumer Reports.  Steep depreciation means a lightly used car sells for 1/2 of new.

i think a hyundai tucson is a good bet...i would buy the 4wd for safety reasons....besides u would be getting a great pkg (ESP+TC+ABS)....u wont have the side-airbags...but u'll have all those safety features that must be taken into consideration!!!

I've been quite happy with my Sorento.  The base is below 30 K, with the top of the line around 37K BEFORE any trade in deals or money off.

It has ABS, both front and side airbags and a slew of goodies which are usually available on cars many thousands more.

Check it out.

Also good choices are the aforementioned Subarus and possibly those Passat wagons.

SirA's donvalley vw link revealed:

P4081 PASSAT WGN V6 REFEX SILVER LUXURY PKG/ESP/SIDE CURT AUTO $38,685.00 $30,913.00 $7,772.00

That's a 2004 model discounted by $7,772.00, selling for $30,913.00, before taxes, etc. Sounds pretty good, although you must also realize this is now a one year old car; when you factor in the depreciation, the "savings" are likely cost neutral.

As long as you keep your vehicle for 4-5 years, that first year depreciation won't matter much... Check autotrader for prices of 5 years vehicles vs. 6 years old vehicles... not a very big difference... It's only in the first 2-3 years that it does make a big difference.

SirA...yes, tempting. However, my Audi A4 inner child is screaming for attention.

Went to Agincourt Autohaus the other day between meetings to kill some time and "kick the tires" of an A4 3.0 Avant...mmmmmmm, AAAAA44444...doh! $50K!

Anyone know the split on the Forester with automatic transmission (eg. 50/50 or 90/10, etc)? I know that the Impreza auto drives at 90/10, while the manual is at 50/50. How about the new Legacy's? Thanks.
