ZX3/5 Rims and Winter Tires
« on: March 07, 2005, 05:31:35 pm »
I noted in a previous post that someone was told that they couldn't put 15" winter rims on thier ZX3. Unless it's an SVT that's a crock! I'm running WM-50 Blizzaks on 15" Wal Mart steel rims and there is no problem with clearance whatsoever. BTW, The Blizzaks are fantastic, much better than I anticipated. Also, I need a recommendation for a decent relatively inexpensive performance oriented summer tire.I'm thinking Proxes 4s or Kumhos on my factory 16" rims. I'm not eager to go to a bigger wheel as the roads here suck and going to a smaller profile runs a much higher risk of bent rims. Too bad though, I'd like 17s. :0(

I think what was meant is that you cant fit 15" on an SVT. The other versions have no issues. You can actually go as small as 14" on the ZX3.

As for tires you will be looking at 205/50/16. Some good, well priced options are:

Summer Performance
Kumho Ecsta 712, BFG gForce Sport, Nitto NeoGen and Falken FK451

All Season Performance
Toyo Proxes 4, BFG Traction T/A, Kumho ASX, Falken ZE-512 and Pirelli P-Zero Nero MS

Thanx for the advice, Morty! I also have to amend my post as the tires are 195/65/15 WS-50s, not WMs. I'll probably be getting the Proxes 4 then, as the reviews I've read have been good and the weather is just unpredictable enough to warrant 4 seasons.

No worries. The Proxes 4 has been a popular choice and seems to be doing a good job. Good wet weather performance, but still has large enough tread blocks to offer good dry stability for spirited driving.
