Yellow fog lights don't really allow you to see in the fog...it allows others to see you.

Hmm - seeing the road markings at night without fog is hard enough, with fog it might be .....

I may just get those foglights installed after all. Also, they look damned cool.

"Yellow fog lights don't really allow you to see in the fog...it allows others to see you"

Perhaps I should have been more clear.  How about this:  Yellow fog lights allow you to see the line markings on the road easier in fog.  The yellow light makes the traces of white paint left on the road stand out better, and therefore, I can summarize by saying that yellow fog lights allow you to see better in the fog.

Skypoint, if you opt for the fog lights, then be prepared for the likely possibility of repairing them from time to time as they can easily get chipped or even smashed by small rocks and debris on the road since they are mounted so low.

I have fogs on my 240 and have had to replace them 3 times to date due to them getting smashed. I have since bought plactic covers from Volvo for them and only take them off when I actually HAVE to use the lights ( i.e in the fog). The covers help protect them when not in use (obviously). I doubt that you can get covers for them on your S60, but if you can you may want to look into this.

How long have you had the fog lights for, Bullit_blue? Are you talking about having to change them 3 times a year or three times in 5 years?

Also, were they smashed in normal urban driving or on out of town highways?

my foggers have done alright, although a bulb did once burn out (got replaced for free)

Although our speed limits are rather slow here in BC, I must say that some of our more major roads have excellent road markings with reflectors, rumble strips, and reflective painted lines.  But other roads get all this stuff scraped away in the winter by the ploughs.

Skypoint, your car is prewired for the fogs, most of the cost is for software upgrade so your on board computer recognizes the new feature.

I would get the fogs, as I find the foglights give you a wider perimeter of light to the sides, hence picking up any paint reflection.
And I agree with your comment of better appearance.
If I remember correctly, Volvo just came out with a better lense cover which won't break so easily from road debris and stones.

Actually foglights do help you see better in fog or heavy snow when your high beams would just bounce off the percipitation back at you and effectively blind you. The fog light pattern is wide and low aimed more at the road to pick up the lines of the road. Coupled with reduced speed they are highly effective in areas where fog is a problem.

Problem is every yahoo here in Edmonton that has fog lights have them on all the time. Prehaps they feel that they paid big bucks for them and we rarely get thick fog so they will try to burn them out before the lease is up.

Back in the olden days fog lights were yellow because they did not reflect back in your face as much as the whiter driving lights.

That said I dont know where these EXTREEEEMly bright white head lamps fall in the scheme of things.

Skypoint, I mean like once ever 5 years or so, not 3 times a year unless you drive down a gravel road everyday

I believe they got smashed after highway driving. Although I cannot be sure

We have the cats eyes installed in a no. of places in London and area. They take a little scoop out of the ashalpt and place them down in so they only stick up about 1/4 to 1/2". The plows do not remove them as the glue is very strong. The main problem with these here is the price which is $6.00 each and then an expensive machine to install them as well.

Sometimes we don't have a choice.  My car's 'auxiliary lights' are also my DRL's so I'm always driving around with them on.

Since these 'aux lights' are white, I guess they're 'driving lights' per the definition given above.  I don't have the option of using my 'driving lights' in conjunction with my highbeams-- when the Hi's come on, the driving lights are automatically killed.

Dem eyes are the cats a$$.....Highway 144 Nort thu ribbit ville ‘as dem on some terwisties.

There is a section of this highway which rises about 100m with no straight sections. The cats eyes are were installed there a few years ago due to visibility concerns at night. I hear rumors that BMW filmed a TV commercial there in the early ‘90’s. A very picturesque location with rugged hills and the Opaping River meandering through.

Skypoint-I would install extra lighting for sure.It is handy in adverse weather conditions for sure.If you have the bucks then do it.Also, look on line for some deals compared to ordering right from your dealer.
Once you have them installed you will be happy you did and find them handy at times like I said.

Let us know if you get 'em?

Cheers mate,

DD
