I like the looks of the new Avalon and might be a buyer if the rest of the car and the price are as good as the looks. In Alberta we have Access Toyota that seems to me like a rip-off. How can we avoid purchasing the vehicle we desire without going through the Toyota monoply game?? Honda? Infinity?

You will find the rest of the Japanese brands such as Honda, Nissan et al unlikely to be very keen to "discount" either. If you want deep discounts, buy NA. Mazda is willing to deal these days, IMO. If you want a Toyota, you have to cope with the "Access" system.

Can you buy thru a broker or a larger dealership that sells/leases 'all makes'?

I thought that toyota was doing away with the "access toyota" thing? I'm sure I read that last year. I guess I was wrong.

They don't know what to do with it after they were fined. Who knows where it'll end up or what changes will have to be made. A work in progress.

Thats a fact as they were busted for price fixing on their cars. They were caught pretty good as well they should have been. There is nothing wrong with the product just the Criminal way they were selling it.

You'd think that in an open market, that if the price was set too high that people wouldn't buy the product. It's not as if there aren't an alternatives to buying a Toyota. However, this doesn't seem to be the case with Toyota as their sales have gone up in recent years.

Is the problem really egregious price fixing? Or is it just people bitching that they wish something was cheaper?

Trust me, I live in AB too and the Toyota salemen were willing to negotiate. Once I got the best deal from one dealer then I went to another dealer who I went to before and suddenly he was offering me an even better deal.
