Options for rustproofing a new Toyota ?
« on: February 19, 2005, 08:28:47 pm »
Hi

I just ordered a new Sienna yesterday. Currently I drive Corolla 99 and I have had rustproof done for it in RustCheck every year. (I live in Ottawa,ON and they put a lot of salt on the road here). So far I am satisfied with their service .
I am thinking what I should do with the new Sienna. I have the following options, that I listed in order of my preference from mostv preferrable to the least.
1) do not have any rustproof done for the first 3-4 years while the car is on warranty and then start using Crown or RustCheck
2) Start rustproofing in Crown/RustCheck from the first year the car is on the road
3) Never have any rustproof done
4) Have it done at the dealership (they are quite eager to sell it to me for some exorbitant price, but having read a few reviews and several topics on the Internet, I think generally it is just a ripoff. They keep reminding me that Toyota might void the warranty if rustproofing is done on the aftermarket).

I will much appreciate any opinions regarding that. Does anybody know if Toyota would void its warranty if rustproof is done in Crown/RustCheck?
Thanks

Every new Rolls Royce and Mercedes that enters Canada is given the Krown treatment. If its good enough for them then its good enough for a new Toyota. Krown and or Rust Check are the best out there in the market place.

I have never had it done in the last 30 years,
and live in central Ontario
Had a 87 pick up (300,000 km)for 7 years,
88 Safria Van 10 years (250,000 km),no rust
5 year old Caddy and still no rust.
So I guess I would say not to get it done.
It is not like a Japanise car from the 70's when they last for 4 years before they where rust out. Fords from the 70's were also bad for rust

Pass on the rustproofing.  My 96 Civic hback does not have a spot of rust on it.  The underneath is covered in a rubber gravelguard type goo that will do its job untill the car is worn out sometime in the next ten years.  All the seams on Toyotas are sealed, the door drains work well and they generally won't rust while you own it.  Save the coin, it'll be fine.  Better yet take a look around at the mall, see much rust on ten year old toyotas?

My 2 cents.  You buying from TGLT?
I miss my motorcycle!

PS.  I worked at a "dealer" in Ottawa.  It is about 90% ripoff.  Your van will be fine.

I had rustproofing and undercoating done on my '01 Toyota when I bought it new. In hindsight, I think it was a waste of money because most cars start to rust around the wheel wells, probably because (someone else may have a better answer) of road debris flying off the tires and chipping the paint. I regularly check to see if there's any stone chips and use a touch up pen (that's available from the Toyota dealer) to fix the chips where water can eat away at the metal. I also wax three times a year for added protection.

There may be anywhere from 5 to 15 klm's on the car between the factory test drive and loading and unloading while in transit to you. If the car was in stock at another dealer in Canada then more milage may be on it as to the delivery to your dealer.

Rustproofing is a waste of money.

Some new cars have as much as 800 km on the OD.  Ask for a $1,000 off the price.

I cannot tell you know I work for, but we did some testing of a few products at work. Testing involved several aspects. Ability to creep (two steel plates separated by thin shims). Ability to displace water. Salt spray. How easily the product washed off, etc.

We found the Krown to be far superior to the other products.

Krown T32. This product is red/pink in colour. It is a bit thinner that T40 and is usually used by most outlets.

Krown T40. This product is tan/honey coloured. It is a bit thicker than T32, but still flows very well. I prefer T40, especially for the underside of the vehicle. I also use it inside all the panels. This weekend, the temperature was about 5C and the T40 began seeping out of all the joints again.

You can also specify the above Krown products with Krown Tack.

RustCheck didn't do as well as the Krown. We also tested some other products...can't remember which (another lab at work did the testing).

I chose to use Krown T40 for my Honda CR-V. I buy it by the 20 liter pail and use my own compressor and applicator to apply it.

I also do not drill any holes. I remove my interior door trim panels, etc. Most owners will not go to this extent, but there are a few things you can do to avoid having them drill holes. Rocker panels often have rubber plugs under the car that can be removed for rustproofing. The same applies to the B pillar where the door electrics enter through a rubber grommet; pull it off while spraying. Same goes for the front hoods and rear trunk lids or hatches.

BMW!!!

Where do you purchase these 20 litre pails of Krown?  Dealer?  I never thought to ask because they certainly aren't displayed for retail?

I get my pail from the local distributor.

Rustproofing kits (the gun, bottle and wands) are available locally or from Eastwick for well under $100. A 2HP, 20 gallon compressor is all you need.
