Yes the rule about Canadians driving an American plated car in Canada is still in force. I found out bringing a new Caddi back from GM Headquarters at the airport in Detroit a few years back. Got busted at the Border but was released and was allowed to take the car with a stiff warning.

Some cars by some Mfrs can be Canadianized by those Mfs in Canada.  Some MBs for example. It looks as if it is minor changes such as fitting different seatbelts, speedometers, turning on DRLs and so on.

Barrie. When I first came to Canada I heard many horror stories about that... snowbirds being fined and even having their cars impounded.
I think it applies even to, for example, You go on vacation to Vancouver but to save money you fly into Seattle and rent a car there... drive to the border and you get booked.

I quizzed my son-in-law about this as he now lives in Portland and when the kids fly home they land in Detroit and take a Rentacar from there to London. He has had no problem as yet but I am waiting for it to happen. They have done this 3 times in the last year and so far so good.

Fack….what about on the way home from work?

Steam…..lots of steam. Steam spewing out of my hood scoop at the first light when I get to town. The smell of glycol….wonderful. I’m not going to stop as I’m late and have to pick up my son at school.

With my luck this week I hit every red light to and from the school…..more steam. Everybody staring at you with a WTF look……clouds bellowing out of the hood scoop, grill, and panel gaps. I pull over and find no major issues….just green glycol all over the engine. I race home and get caught in a radar trap…..140 in a 90…..more stream bellowing out….cranky 5 year old….grouchy cop.

“This is your lucky day Mr. Vaillancourt”….”get this thing off the road and go before I change my mind”…..more steam….a mushroom clouds over Highway 55 West.

I get home and fined that the upper rad hose has been rubbing against a pulley….yep…a hole. There are no hoses in Sudbury for Rut Ro….Friday is the earliest that I will get one from Toronto. Rut Ro has a boo boo.

You lucky SOB. And that's what must have happened - you gave him a real SOB story and walked.

Couldn't you make yourself a temporary hose though or are there too many angles to "adjust for"?

Group hug for Snowy, everyone...

What a rotten way to end the day, Snow.  At least the cop was able to restore your faith in humanity.

Would this be at all related to the CEL problem you had a few weeks ago?

Here is Rut Ro’s boo boo. Took off the upper rad hose and found the hole:

Now I have to drive the beater until Friday. Good thing this did not happen while driving to and from Toronto last weekend.

Too many angles and bends INCO…..I will have to wait for Friday. $23 for the hose and I will avoid the $90/hr. shop rate and DIY. I guess when I get the new hose I should make the proper connections and fill up the reservoir? Let it run with the cap loose to get the air out? Barrie, Arctic, or other resident wrenches…..what is the proper procedure?

Probably should have happened when DSW had his shoes off in RutRo - could have steam-cleaned his socks..........

BTW - what's that orange shag carpet doing in RutRo anyway? I've seen engine compartments clean enough to eat off of, but orange carpet is a bit much, even for you, Snowy.

Oldiwaun…..That is my engine bay towel I use so I do not scratch the fenders or grill when I do preventive maintenance. It’s not orange but blossom red…..bad lighting.

Drop enough fluid out of your rad to not have a mess when you change the hose. Check your clamps for being good and install the new hose. Fill up the rad and put your heater controls on Max Hi Fan and Heat. Fill rad while running engine for about 20 minutes with the rad cap off. No air locks this way. When the rad is burped out and you have lots of heat in the cabin put the Cap on with the rad being full. Thats about it to do it correctly. Piece of Cake.

I bet you were steaming too!

Funny someone should type 'SOB story'. Was in the Saab booth last night and my friend who's parents had a 9-5 Wagon was talkin' to the lady rep about Saabs when my Pa said to me "I should go up and tell him 'enough of your Saab story' ". He doesn't. But then she starting telling about when her BF brought home his new Saab and parked it out front for her to get a ride in and the neighbour across backed into it, and she said "oh it's a really sob story" and we bust-out laughing. But she was an eclectic one herself. "We Saab owners go our own way" she claimed as she pointed straight ahead. Made for a good laugh, but at least she knew when to shut up as we only had 40 mins left to check other things out.

Sorry to hear about your troubles Snowy!  Pretty lucky, minor break though.  The water pump on the 1978 Benz I owned exploded in a winter rush hour traffic jam in Ottawa about 5 years ago.  Steam, and wet, slippery belts lead to a
full shutdown of the electrical system. Not fun, and cost $600.00 to boot!
