Wiper blade noise is driving me crazy
« on: February 04, 2005, 07:44:16 pm »
My 1999 Infinity's wiper blades squeek and chatter every time the're used. I have replaced the blades four times and cleaned the windsheild with everything from Windex to alcohol. The car is garage kept, so it's not tree sap. When I get new blades they work well for only a few weeks, then they start to chatter like rubber on glass, which is what they are, but I've never had so much trouble with wiper blades.

Blazo what brand are they? Are they real rubber blades or plastic? There is a difference on certain ones.

The first replacements were Teflon, and they left streaks, the next were Bosch, and then Trident which I think is rubber. They chatter the worst. Could it be the spring tension in the wiper arms? They feel alright, and the car is in mint condition.

Maybe you should stay with the Infiniti wipers. I can't imagine all Infiniti's wipers chatter with MOE. I had Teflon blades from Canadian Tire, they left too many streaks so I went back to the original Toyota blades and everything's fine.

This crops up every so often among all manufacturers, it's most likely the angle of the wiper blades to the windshield, you may have to twist the wiper arms to fix it. Pair of pliars, garden hose, 10 minutes to fix. My 1991 VW Jetta & the mother's 2002 Jetta did this, both had to have the arms twisted. The '03 ION's had a TSB on it as well but mine doesn't suffer from it.

The force/tension of the wiper arm can be adjusted as it presses the wiper blade onto the windshield.  It is a long shot but your wiper arm pivots/base joints may be out of spec.  It is rare but I have seen it before.  This is the stalk that comes up thru the lower winshield valance and is usually connected to futher mechs.  You can try to pull/push left to right to see if there is any freeplay.  My money from what you describe is a tension issue and may only end up being a small adjustment with the wiper arm spring.  G-luck.

I thought you could just adjust the angle of the wiper against the windshield as well somehow - not just from bending it, but an actually adjustment.

I usually bend the wiper arm in a somewhat downward position to apply a little more tension on them. I also only use Trico Brand Blades which I have found to be the best longest lasting rubber blades out on the marketplace.

Are blades made to swipe in certain directions?...

This happened to me when I changed my wiper inserts too...so I removed them and threaded them back in from the other end of the blade...And it worked!?...No more chatter...

Usually they will work in either direction but sometimes they act up. When I take off the old blades we use them on other cars in my shop and they work as new as each car has a different angle of glass. They usually work like a new one on the 2nd car or truck.
