YOU ARE NOT ALONE I have a 2005 Honda Civic SE automatic 1.7L 4door that had the transmission replaced at 40,000km and now at 170,000km it looks like i need to have it replaced again. The solenoids plug up on the transmission and stop it from shifting. there are small screens on the ports on the solenoids (which are mounted on the outside of the transmission ) that get plugged with junk.  the transmission does not have a transmission filter so if anything gets into the transmission then it screws the shifting solenoids and will burn the transmission. i have always drove Honda cars for years and GM trucks it is the first time i had this problem with the Honda civic.  I did find out when i went in with my 2001 civic and the brakes went in the first 10,000km and Honda paid for them with an attitude like i did it on purpose lol then i found out that the dealer paid for them out of there own pocket so it wouldn't go in the system.  I spoke to the mechanic outside the garage and he told me the brakes on the 2001 had to be replaced on allot of the civics.  Which got me thinking how many things does the dealer pay for to keep it off the books so it doesn't look like there is a problem. I think this is the global market at work, when China will be the only supplier and all cars will be a big steaming pile of crap.

That is a correct.

This generation of Civic 2001-2005 was horrible.  Anyone with a 2006 experience similar issues?  They don't build Honda's or Toyota's like they used too.

My wife has an '03 Civic that she bought new.  No transmission issues yet but:

- after 1 week, all of the fabric started peeling off the doors - 7 years later, trim is peeling off everywhere.

- had big time a/c issues at 100,000 km

- had a cracked exhaust manifold at 100,000km

- she fixes stabilizer links and various other minor suspension problems every 6 months.

- seat fabric stains like crazy.

... and so on.

This is the third Honda Civic we've had ('93 hatch, '97 si, '03 DX).   Each of these vehicles has been less reliable than the last.

You obviously have not driven VW's in the last 15 years or so. I have driven both. The rattle traps are NOT the VWs.

Hey!  That's a good statement.  I have always owned Honda for the past 20 years. NO MORE.  Their quality is rivalling GM.

Anyway, I would never have touched a VW as little as 5 years ago.  The Golf won car of the year.  So, I thought I have to test drive this Golf TDI.  WOW.  Got rid of the 3 year old Civic and took a big hit but what a difference between the VW and Civic.  Where do I begin.  Road noise on the Civic was terrible. Lack of power and torque on the Civic.

Plus Consumer Reports gave the Golf TDI 84 out of 84, top marks.

Man, Honda IS done. Tin cans on wheels.

OK Barrie1 you can attack me on the GM statement.

You just need to watch out for the cracked Engine Blocks!
