2005 HONDA CIVIC BAD TRANSMISSION
« on: January 27, 2005, 08:30:00 pm »
Honda says I am the only person in the world that has a brand new Honda Civic with an automatic transmission that stays in low gear and has to towed back to the dealership for repairs. This has happened twice in less than 2000 miles. This time they replaced the solenoids and said if it happens again they will replace the whole transmission. This makes me think they dont really know what is wrong. Anybody else hear of this problem on the 2005 Civic?

I haven't seen any tranny problems on the EL's (Civics) at all, but the 2nd gen TL/CL, thats a whole other can of worms...

You might be very well the only person.  Perhaps that  is why they have no experience regarding the solution.  At least your dealing with Honda and not say Ford, or DC or the other one ....  haha; because Honda is fanatical about getting the problems corrected and avoiding a reputation that the others have acquired.

The big three would tell you that "it's because you didn't follow the maintanance schedule closely" or "err...it's supposed to do that..."

Honda fixed my AC condensor after warranty so you are in good hands.  The fact it isn't slipping but simply it failed to come out of 1st tells me they might be right

2000 miles? Towed to dealer twice? What's the big deal?

How dare you complain. That's Honda you're talking about. You should just be happy you were allowed to buy one.

Ditto, I've noticed that they've started to take on that famous late 70's early 80's GM customer service too. They all build bad cars regardless of what ornaments on the hood.

Well a cam sensor went on the 2002 SIR @ about 16,000 km at Xmas time.  Started car, check engine light stayed on and car was governed (held) to 3000 rpm.  Dealer cleared code and said it was a cam sensor and to give it another try.  Week later light comes on again, but no reduction in rpm. Phoned dealer, they order parts without looking at it and it was fixed in 30 minutes.

Sensor and a gasket where about $135.00

This dude's tranny will probably be more of an electrical/electronic nature than mechanical.  If it were a domestic manufactured car I would be worried about the issue.

If folks think that the domestic manufactures have anywhere near the level of mechanical and electrical/electronic sophistication/excellence, for the lack of better words, than Honda/Toyota, they don't know the auto repair world.  The gap will only grow with the onset of Hybrids and more emission intensive motors.

I didn't think Hondas had a transmission. :-)  This is a first for me as well, never came across a civic with a tranny problem.  I'm sure it will be resolved asap.
I miss my motorcycle!

Lemonaid 2005 New Cars, (Phil Edmundston et all) gave the impression Honda is in no way trouble free. In addition, they were very smart in extending their "Goodwill" programs extra years to cover transmission problems discretely.

I went to that site and if you read all those complaints closely they all have the same basic sentence structure and not one mispelled word. They are all written by the same person.  Too many  "" and !!.

That site is a commercial advertizing effort.  It's just one big ad fest.  It's a troll for Honda owners seeking actual information about vehicle problems to expose them to advertising.

The only credible sources are sites that have registered members and date, exact time of postings, and some feedback and counter replys from the original poster like on the EP3Hatch BBS and other Honda sites.

You will need to ask Honda for details, as Honda
does not disclose info, as they do not want to upset people like yourself Articsteve.

Sorry to burst your naive bubble.

I work out of a Honda dealership and this is the first I have heard of this problem with the new Civic's, so I just went to talk to the service manager and one of the better techs, and they said that this is the first time either of them has heard of a problem like this as well.

Sure tranny's can have some issues now and then, but this particular problem is a new one on them. They also said that the probable outcome will be the replacement of the transmission. In their opinion, this is an oddity and is not something that is a known issue...

Seems to me it could be an on going weakness for Honda.

American Honda Extends Warranties on Select Automatic Transmissions

Torrance, Calif., September 20, 2002 --- American Honda Motor Co., Inc. announced today it will provide extended warranties on approximately 1.2 million Honda and Acura models equipped with automatic transmissions due to problems that may result in premature wear or failure. The extended warranty will cover affected transmissions for seven years or 100,000 miles.

The standard bumper-to-bumper warranty for Honda vehicles is three years or 36,000 miles, while Acura vehicles are covered for four years or 50,000 miles.

Vehicles covered by the extended warranty include:

2000 - 2001 Honda Accord, Odyssey and Prelude

2000 - 2002 and some 2003 Acura 3.2 TL

2001 - 2002 and some 2003 Acura 3.2 CL

While only two percent of these vehicles have experienced these transmission problems, American Honda will provide extended transmission warranties on all potentially affected vehicles. "Our priorities are making sure our customers are taken care of and reassured they can continue to depend on their Honda or Acura automobile for a long time to come," said Tom Elliott, executive vice president for American Honda.

There is usually plenty of warning to the driver that the transmission is not operating properly, such as slow or erratic shifting, giving them ample time to take the vehicle in for service.

American Honda will notify all owners of eligible vehicles via mail in the coming weeks.

Your not upsetting me.  The 600,000 Odyessys listed did not all break down on the side of the road.  Honda found a deficiency and fixed them all.  It was probably a safety item like a possible problem Park/Neutral switich and nothing to do with the mechanical part of the tranny.

You need to post what the problem is.  First year Acura ELs had a safety recall on the rear emergency brakes.  A little plastic grommet/cap was replaced by a rubber one.  You need the details.  If this was read by certain types it would be interpreted as a big recall because of a inferior product line, when in fact it was a 5 cent rubber cap replacing a 3 cent plastic cap.

Regarding the bad trannys for the 2001 - 2002 Honda and Acura units; 90% of the other manufactures would simply deny the situation.

I had this Volvo S70 and the day before I was trading it for a Bimmer the tranny went into limp mode, but came out of it when the battery was discontinued.  At about 80,000 I completely flushed the tranny with 20 litres of tranny fluid.  It was also done at 48,000 by the dealer.  I always thought it shifted OK, but my wife and son kept insisting that it was making a noise from 1st to second.  I never heard it. One winter the car got exposed to a really bad farm blizzard.  It would start and idle for as long as you wanted, but when you shifted into drive it would stall.  I thought it would need to be towed to Toronto.  After 3 days it finally went into gear without stalling.  After that I told the wife she was going back to standard shift.  That Volvo is my last automatic I'm getting.  Actually, I think the problem was the "park/neutral" switch which is listed on Volvospeed as a known problem.  But there are too many systems attached to automatics today and I don't need that kind of BS.

But if I was getting an vehicle with an auto it would be in a Honda/Acura and not a Volvo now that Ford has completly morphed into their operations.  It can't be good.

The new civic's do have trim issues.  All 4 door cloth panels peeled off 1 week after the gf bought her '03 Civic.  Service manger admitted it was a chronic problem
