Keerist. Talk about the blind leading the blind.

Prime example of not using the correct TYPE of crane.

In fact, neither one of those 'in the drink' are classified as cranes.
They're called 'knuckle booms', in that they extend/retract and fold up and tuck behind the truck cab, and don't have the stability to handle this type of recovery (as is evident). This looks as though it's in England.
To remove the vehicles, a mobile crane designed to always carry it's counterweight behind the operators cab regardless of position is what is required. A 25 ton capacity mobile (Grove) would be a safe bet.
Barring that, a super heavy-duty tow truck (that can handle transit buses (20 ton) with an extendable boom would suffice too.

Moral of this story? Don't send a boy to do a man's job.

Interesting how these pictures make the rounds - I've already seen this series on the Bullitt web-site and one other. Wonder how the insurance claims all went?

I hope everyone has realized that the last 2 pictures have been photoshopped (The second crane actually never went in).  Infact, it is a horrible photoshop.  I am confident I could do a better job, and I am only an amateur.

Yeh, I saw the original few photos on some website and then not more than a week later the doctored lost couple of frames were in circulation.   Look for the same background scenes (people, boat) repeated.

I thought I was very perceptive but that one slipped by until you mentioned the discrepency. You're right though, vehicle changes in background
and the red cone is gone (although that is irrelevent), there no longer is a trailer hooked up to the second boomtruck. This Could be due to the fact the operator finally realised he had nowhere to deposit the first truck after he had it lifted up and dropped the trailer out of the way. Anyway....

I'm a very good swimmer, actually. I was a junior lifeguard at the outdoor pool for a few summers and I go to the Shuswap every summer. I think its because when I was 13, we were stuck in traffic at a bridge because someone had lost control and gone over. We watched the divers recovering the people inside the vehicle. There was no reason for them to go over, it was summertime, and the roads were dry. It's not bad on big bridges, but we've got so many narrow bridges around here that its a bit scary. I usually crawl across them going down the middle of the bridge.

I'm also scared of heights. And the Big Puff Marshmallow man.

I can understand that business of phobia, as my wife is claustrophobic. It drives her nuts. She hates it but there isn't much you can do about it contrary to what some shrinks say.

You being a former lifeguard you've been taught how to get out of a sinking car (?) and how to get your last breath of air(before you surface) from the air trapped at the ceiling of the vehicle.
Do you roll down your driver's window before you cross the bridge?
Don't release any seatbelts because if the vehicle did run (slide) off the bridge you (or other occupants ) could be thrown out the window and be seriously injured (fatally perhaps). I don't know if you're aware of this but firefighters can give you instructions what to do in those cases. Especially since you have your son with you most of the time?

We weren't taught anything about going over a bridge or any river rescue because I worked at a pool. It didn't occur to me to roll down the window, though...that's a good idea. I do have Riley with me all the time. But this fear of crossing bridges began before his time.

By rolling down the window it allows the vehicle to fill with water faster and then you can open your door unless it is damaged. With the vehicle full of water it equalizes the pressure and the door should open a lot easier then before. Thats the theory.
