The New Subaru 2005 thread

DETROIT – Subaru of America Inc. predicts its U.S. sales will top 200,000 units this year, up from the 187,402 units the auto maker delivered in 2004, a top company executive says.

“That is going to be a big breakthrough for us,” Fred Adcock, Subaru executive vice president, says here at the 2005 North American International Auto Show.

It also would mark a significant jump vs. the small 0.3% increase Subaru recorded in 2004 vs. 2003 results. The auto maker hopes to sell 250,000 vehicles in the U.S. by 2007.

Most of the sales increase expected this year will come from Subaru’s first 7-passenger vehicle, the ’06 B9tribeca (previously called the B9X) midsize cross/utility vehicle, which is debuting here and goes on sale this summer.

“Certainly we’ll get some incremental volume there,” Adcock says. “Our dealers have been asking for a vehicle with a third-row seat for years. It’s going to help keep our customers who outgrow our vehicles, and we’re also going to see new buyers come to the brand.”

Adcock predicts annual B9tribeca sales will be 25,000-35,000 units.

Subaru’s sales in 2005 also should benefit from an updated Impreza, Adcock says. Deliveries of the aging sedan, which is due to undergo a facelift this summer, declined 11.8% in 2004 vs. 2003.

But attaining Subaru’s growth projections may be difficult. The auto maker is a minor player in the incentives game, and competitors increasingly are offering all-wheel-drive wagons – a niche Subaru once had to itself.

“Certainly, when you’re a category of one, you have less to worry about. It makes it a little easier,” Adcock says. “But I really think this is the best lineup Subaru has ever had in the U.S.”

Does this mean a new WRX and STi in the summer? 25k-35k B9 units….not!

Fer Christ's sake!  Surely with all 26 letters in the alphabet, 10 numerical digits, and so many possible permutations, Subaru could come up with a better name than 'B9tribeca'?

Did the Impreza get a slight exterior cosmetic refresh for 2005?  I'm liking the new front end.

I wonder if the update will include the tribeca alfa-inspired front end.

The new impreza is fuglier than the last one, which won't help sales again. The Prodrive P1 was the best looking Impreza, they haven't better it so far...

How can Mitsubishi gets the looks so right with the Evo and Subaru get it so wrong?

Yesterday they didn't have a photo - the show hasn't opened!

They simply had it on a list of premieres!

I wanted a peek too, ya know ;)

I'm not familiar with what's up and coming with Impreza, or if it's old news to you, but thought I'd mention it.

The new grille is supposed to celebrate Fuji Heavy Industries' aviation heritage. Ugly isn't the half of it but that's the answer to 'why'. My '04 Impreza might be my first and last Subaru as a result. The schnoz on the new Audis seems restrained in comparison.

Seems like Subaru did better in Canada in 2004 than it did south of the border:

RECORD DECEMBER FOR SUBARU CANADA
January 4, 2005

(MISSISSAUGA) - Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) announced record December sales of 1,285 units, up 27.2 per cent compared to the same month last year. The strong results helped SCI to total annual sales of 16,311 in 2004, 3.5 per cent better than the previous year.

December saw a significant increase in demand for every model in the Subaru lineup, with Legacy sales up by 12.1 per cent, Outback up by 14.3 per cent, Impreza up by 29.6 per cent, and Forester up by 40.3 per cent.

"Great Subaru products and our outstanding dealer network have combined to create sales success," said Don Durst, vice president, sales, of Subaru Canada, Inc. "Everyone at Subaru congratulates our hardworking dealers on achieving such strong results under difficult market conditions."

Subaru Canada, Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. of Japan. Headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario, the company markets and distributes Subaru vehicles, parts and accessories through a network of 100 authorized dealers across Canada.

Rob, if I remember rightly, it's supposed to represent a propeller, and it does look ugly, in the eye of the beholder an' all that...

BMW's logo is also represetative of a propeller, in a much more classy way of course.

While our Forester's and OBW's grilles are boring an non-descript, they don't make anyone hurl.

That's good enough for me...

I'm with John on this one.  Forester and Impreza might be boring but at least you won't have to make excuses for buying one.  IMHO, the Impreza line looks great with the new headlights and standard aluminium wheels and it a great buy at $23K.  There is nothing in this price range with AWD and those features except the feckless Matrix (common Toyota - 123hp?  Get real....)

Saint - I don't disagree that the AWD Matrix w 123hp is too anemic, but Toyota is selling a bunch of them. I particularily noticed them this past summer in NS and PEI - they were common (or is it "come on" ). If I were getting the Matrix, I'd have to skip the AWD and get the XRS fwd w the 180hp high revver (but the lack of torque would drive me nuts so - forget Matrix altogether).

They must be selling a bunch but 123 hp simply isn't enough.  I drove an Impreza back to back with an AWD Matrix and I was stunned at the difference.  The Matrix felt like my '87 Tempo.  I guess brand capital goes a long way because for the same money it wasn't half the car IMHO.  Toyota did the same thing with the RAV4.  In 2001 the replacement RAV4 was ready to be a big seller but a 200hp Escape and 168hp CR-V that came out before and after (respectively) completely stole their thunder. It took Toyota 3 years to rectify a major deficiency.  It certainly turned me off.  They waited too long to address that issue and Toyota is not really a big player in that small SUV market as a consequence.  I don't need neck-snapping power but 0-60 in the 9 second range would be nice.  What is the 2.4 like?

That said, I'm interested to see what Toyota does with the RAV4 in 2006 - it's up for redesign, right?  Make it marginally bigger, and give decent styling and a 180hp engine and I'm interested.

Saint - the 2.4L engine, combined with about 3000lbs (lighter than the CRV and Forester) makes for decent acceleration and passing power. I would never say it's overpowered (more is always good IMO) but given a decent torque curve, and the lesser weight, it feels reasonably quick. Not sports car quick but for it's class, it's about right. It's decent fun to drive in town for daily stuff. Took it to Vancouver/Victoria over the holidays; had 3 adults & luggage aboard and it was fine on the hiway. Hold a 120kph cruise easy.
As to 2006, I have seen pix of the redesign and I like it a lot. Can't recall where the pix were tho. The spare tire is gone off the rear door which will make a lot of ppl happy. Don't know it it's larger or not but appears to be a bit larger in the pix I saw. I heard a rumor that a V6 "might" be available, with the regular engine the present 2.4L four.
