Awaiting Delivery of ZX5
« on: December 20, 2004, 04:38:07 pm »
As most here know that I ordered a ZX5 for my wife
back in October.I finally got a call from my dealer regarding a delivery date for the end of
January. Reason it is taking this length of time,
which is normaly 5-6 weeks on a factory order, is because of slow sales, hence factory shut-downs.
Through my research, I was able to find out that the factory in Mexico, where the ZX5 is built has operated for a total of 2 weeks from the date I made my order (27Oct.) to now.
The salesperson did a search of on lot inventory,
but no luck. He said the side air bags is the issue, as very few people are inclined to want to pay the extra $500.00, hence dealers do not order
their alotments with this safety feature.

So it is  rather easy to understand why so many car mfgs do not spec said vehicles with side air bags for the Canadian market.

Don't forget pics.  A friend picked up a loaded 2004 ZX5 for about 18K.  Leather sunroof...the works.  It was a deal through one of his friend's dad.

Yeah, I think most Focus shoppers wouldn't spec the car with $500 SABs.

However, I think more people would spec Mazda3's or Vibes with SABs. VW has a higher take on them I'm sure, but their option price is only $220.

Nice to see companies at least offering them for safety-oriented customers (which we all should be).

I find it hard to believe that the dealer didn't know the wait time. The zone would normally inform dealers of plant activity and order delays due to issues like these.

But, hope the car is worth the wait. I think they look nifty on the road.

To me $500 is peanuts in comparison to the benefits. I do not understand your statement Siraqua that more people would spec a Mazda3 or Vibe with SAB, and not a Focus. Do you mean to say a Focus customer is not as concerned with safety, or that a Focus shopper would be more of a penny pincher. Both Mazda3 and the ZX5 SES are in the same MSRP range.
For me safety is relative, no matter what price level the car is in.

This is my first domestic factory order experience, and must say, I'm not impressed with the communication or lack of. I have read many articles warning customers who factory order domestics, with the concern that the dealership would rather sell what is on the lot.
I have the feeling this might be partly true, as today the salesperson made a valiant attempt to talk me into  2 other ZX5's that had SAB, but had other options my wife does not want (moonroof & leather seats), and also different exterior colours. So who knows when the dealership actually processed the order to FMC.

The part I have a hard time to understand is in comparsion when ordering my Volvo's, it takes 6 weeks from point of order to arrival at dealership, and this is from Europe.

Whereas with a car built in North America as in my case will take 3 months.

If I was waiting for the V50, I would be a hell of lot more impatient.

MD: Leather sunroof can't work too well, unless it's highly taut seal skin?

There's nothing wrong with a leather sunroof.  After all, aren't most cows born with them?

Sorry to hear about the poor experience, S60. But on the upside, you'll have a nice new car soon to show off. I saw one just like the one you're getting the other day. Looks really nice in red. And kudos to you for  gettin the SAB option. It was a very smart idea.

Show some pics when you get em.

Geee S60 that would be hard on me…..I hate waiting for a car especially after making up my mind on the final choice. I find it hard to believe that people would not want to spend $500 on a key safety component. On a lease that would only be $12/month.

Me Mum in-law has a black ZX5 with all the toys. I talked her out of a Taurus as she is a Ford person (the only thing we have in common) and is very happy with the car.

I'm saying exactly that - the Focus customer is probably more cost-sensitive than the Mazda3 or Golf/Jetta customer. Not to mention a bit older and perhaps wouldn't spring for as many options or research the benefits as much.

Not as sensitive as a Cavalier/Sunfire customer or anything, but probably more along the lines of a Civic customer. Hard to say - that's my feeling. And you yourself say that the dealer doesn't spec 'em that way because the interest isn't there as much.

The ZX5 is in the same price range as a Mazda3, and is quite capable and an excellent handler. However, I would think a few more incentives are available on the Focus, and I'll go way on a limb that you won't prob won't agree with and say that generally Focuses are probably more of rural or suburban car than a Toronto/Vancouver/Montreal car, selling well where Ford dealers are better represented and foreign vehicles are not. I see them in Toronto, and the ZX3's and 5's in Montreal, but not to the same degree.

I think there is a combo of factors. Again, doubt you'd agree but that's my impression. I may not be explaining myself as clear as possible though.

But you seem to be able to wait patiently for the car. How is your wife feeling about it all?

My wife is fine waiting for her new car.

Myself I would prefer the Mazda3, except for the fact SAB's,heat front seats and traction control are not even offered as options, which for us is
unacceptable. Also my wife does not like Mazda styling at all.

I did visit 3 Mazda dealerships, and when asking about these features, I was bluntly told, I was the 1st person that specified SAB, and traction control and given the impression I was from Mars.

We had a My1999 Golf, which my wife enjoyed driving, but she did not like dealing with the VW
sales, after sales, service departments, and end of lease experience, and I must say I do not want go through this type of attitiude again as well.

The Focus is a settle for situation,(best deal lease wise at the moment)with a short term lease of 24 months.
Just a little surprised that it will take this long to get a massed produced car, just because of a safety feature.

It cements my thinking the difference with dealing with large mfgs (Ford) in comparison to a small mfg (Volvo), that it is much easier or easier to access information plus have questions answered from the smaller company, then getting lost in the maze/jungle of the larger companies
who's priority is not simple information.
Not saying Ford hasn't treated me well, I guess I am saying that Bigger is not Better.
