So I was talking to a co-working today about cars and his preferences came up.  Really ummmmm interesting point of view.

He owns a VW but dislikes the interior but loves the exterior.  He hates the steering (too stiff).

He than said he LOVED american cars because the interiors were the BEST and that the steering was so easy, he hates having to use more than 1 finger to steer.

I called him a LAZY driver haha.  Interesting view though.  Personally I dislike lazy steering and American made dashes are horrible.

And then did his head spin completely around on his shoulders, speaking in tongues, spewing pea soup, with eyes blazing fire-red?  He is the anti-driver.

Overboosted steering is good thing if you don't want to strain your arm muscles.  I am willing to bet he's not much of an enthusiast nor a driver's driver.

Car takes body from point a to point b.

Don't think many will agree with him on this site....I like it stiff.

Take him for a ride in your car JB and make him appreciate control as well as a few other points when he is hanging on for dear life.

And if you really want to clue him in - use the S2K on a nice day.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of ppl out there like Jb's co-worker. They just view it as basic transportation and the easier the better. End of story, they just don't care.

And there are clearly more of them out there than there are of us.  Hence the manual transmission's presence on the endangered species list.

Hahhhhhhhhhaaa I've driven some cars before at the dealership (like the RL was it?)  that the steering is SO FREAKING OVERPOWERED!!! that if you give it a good spin to one direction and let go, the momentum of the wheel alone will make it continue spinning under power.

Now that's overpowered!

I do like to feel the bumps in the road through the wheel; I like to know exactly the difference between my steeringwheel imput and the car's actual output.

reminds me when the e46 3-series came out. It's steering is way overboosted. Owners complained and bmw fixed it in the later models.
Overboosted steering wheels encourages lazy drivers. Hence you see lots of one-arm steerers at parking lots.

I'm curious guys. How many of you young drivers have ACTUALLY driven a vehicle WITHOUT power assist steering? Raise your hands.

Right here too.  1985 Toyota Corolla.  Not so bad -- plus, it used to be my grandma's car... so if she can do it, any of us wimps should be able to too.

My dad's 1995 Ford Ranger didn't have power steering. For some reason, I prefer a truck WITHOUT power steering. I guess those aren't available anymore though...

I've driven many a cars with and without power steering.  Some days at the dealership I'd drive well over 20 cars. - everything from an NSX to some industrial utility-vans.

Good post Jamesbe, the Big 3 have to be very careful with issue(North American culture).

All the car rags are full of critics bashing the
American car makers, which is what the buying public reads, but at the same time as many have posted, 80% of the customers, prefer the built in North American culture in their daily driver.
EG:soft, comfy, simple, and easy to drive cars.

Quite a few of the new offerings from the Big 3 are starting to tighten up the suspensions, more rigid bodys, more high tech gizmos, etc, which might alienate the typical North American customer.

To us 20% it might look like finally the American car makers are going to get it right, but are they.

I have probably had 50 cars without power anything including a 1961 Impala Convertible with the 409 in it. Talk about heavy steering to park with it, especially with Wide track Tiger Paws on it. Must have weighed 10 Tons to the feel of it. I do like the posi-ratio power steering in my Seville tho as it is nice with very good road feel.
