GPS steers me into a winter wonderland
« on: December 13, 2004, 12:36:37 pm »
So Saturday I headed out to the town of carp and on my way back I was going to take my usual route to the highway.  I decided to go to Wal-Mart first and asked my GPS which would be the fastest route.  I was pretty sure it would be my regular route but why not listen to the british woman for directions?

I was totally surprised, the GPS said, to go a different route, I laughingly followed the route, which lead me into a BEAUTIFULL winter wonderland.   The roads were not plowed, the trees were hanging over the narrow passageway full of snow, what a site to see, and on top of it all, the roads were twisty and hilly!

Can't wait till spring to test out those roads with the S2000.  Thanks to the british woman (whomever you are) for the excellent trip!

P.S.  It was "shorter" but longer since I had to go slower because of the snow.  But I would have NEVER went that way, I didn't even know it existed.  Gotta love the GPS!

OK, here's an interesting idea or maybe I don't understand GPS very well - when you ask for alternate route to your destination, how does the GPS voice know which roads are passable or not? What if the alternate route is an untravelled and possibly poorly maintained route?

What don't I understand here?

The next generation of navigation has real time weather and traffic reporting.  Current ones are not that smart...they just do their calculation on distance and what mode you set it on.  You can stipulate no toll freeways, minimize highways, shortest distance etc.

My navi doesn't take me to these off the hilter roads....probably knows it's an MDX and not fit for off road duty.

haha, good story.  JB just curious, would you have followed the GPS's directions if it were a man talking instead of the british woman? (I just love the accent)
