Good headlight replacements (non HID)?
« on: December 11, 2004, 04:28:48 am »
It appears that my existing headlights are too dim...find it hard to drive at nights lately. Want to replace with new ones that are brighter than stock, remain legal and not too expensive?

Some brands that I have read about include: GE Nighthawk, Sylvania Silverstars, Philips 30% Brights, GE Super Blue District. Any recommendations and/or experiences? Thanks in advance.

I have a set of Sylvania Silverstars and like them. I’m not sure if the high beam range is better but the white light brightens everything up better. They are noticeably better when you are the only source of light around. I have driven from friends cottages and I see much better in real darkness. Carry spares though….I have gone through two bulbs in 18 months.

don't buy any aftermarket performance-bulbs without a warranty! (1 year at least)

All joking aside, have you had your eyes checked lately? A few years ago,I was have a hard time seeing a night. I had my eyes checked and needed new glasses.
I have heard nothing but good about the silverstars. I looked on the "hoen" site that mdxtasy posted. Those are some pretty high wattage bulbs. IMO,I would stay away from those. I've seen lots of damage to wiring harnesses from bulbs like that. These may be different then the made in china/e-bay crap, but I would not risk it.
Enjoying the Alberta advantage

I believe the trouble I have been having with headlight, license plate, and running light bulbs can be attributed to a harsh ride. With the S03’s, 17 wheels, higher than recommended tire psi, and poor road conditions make for heavy pounding and vibrations. The sensitive filaments take a beating with my driving style. I’m sure driving a couch would make a difference in light bulb life.

I agree that you need to stay away from the 80W bulbs...get something close to factory and you will be safe.  You can get higher wattage bulbs but you'll need to upgrade the connectors.  I stuck with factory wattage and have been happy.  I find the Hoen's a bit better than the Silverstar's....but the inconvenience of the Hoen's might not be worth it...the Silverstars can be bought at any store in town.

Hey Snowy....don't forget the fact that you drive it like a bat out of he11.  :-)

Now have Sylvania SilverStars. Much brighter than the more traditional bulbs I was using, but don't know relative to other bulbs out there.

When one of my low beam bulbs burned out a couple months ago (yet another VW with premature bulb loss), I replaced both low beams with PIAA Xtreme Whites.  They hype it as 110W worth of light from 55W.  IIRC, the light temp is 4000K.  They are markedly better than the originals (which weren't too bad to start with...not HID, but not bad).  I dont't know if oncoming drivers find them too bright or not, but I am very happy with them.
