I have determined without a doubt that it is the gear selector. How do I go about fixing this.

Get a diagram from a manual or off the microfiche at GM. It'll show you the parts you need to replace. Get a flashlight to help you locate the fastners on the column to undo. It is not as hard as it looks, just uncommon to repair.

Pancho the job itself is not that bad to do even haveing the proper service manuel will help you repair this problem. Eric has a good suggestion as well. The parts will be quite reasonabley priced so there's no large outlay of cash on your behalf either. I would coat them with Lubriplate from GM as well. The can is only around $6.00.
