Hey Guys. Whats your opinions on used Land Rovers. Freelander, Discovery, Range Rover. Seem to be going to good prices, is that for a reason. Whats reliability like, parts costs etc...

We thought about one.  A little research and talking to some owners and we decided to stay away.  The reliability is quite horrible and expensive to maintain.  A friend bought a Range Rover (2 years old) and he sold it 1 year later.  Very comfortable, depreciates like crazy, and when things go wrong, it goes really wrong.

I'm sure the older ones without the technology doodads can run for a while but the newer ones just aren't very good out of warranty...in my opinion.  Cheap does not always mean good.

I'd never buy or want a Range.

Toyota Land Cruiser, yes. Benz G-Wagen, bring 'er on.

The nightmare that is a Land Rover? Forget it.

You worried about spelling, Saf? I thought you were the natural enemy of proper spelling.

Anyone driven a Disco?  Sheesh, 5000lbs and 180hp with a V-8 that drinks gas like no tomorrow with not performance.  Off-road is great, but how many people take 'em there?

We used to do lots of electrical work on the Discos, and they were junk.  Some things blew me away.  The manual shifter looked like it came off a D-10 Cat!  But, some stuff was so flimsy it was ridiculous.  Parts are expensive (it's a Buick engine, why?) and dealers are expensive.

I see 2000 Discos for $12-15K, and I think they're overpriced.  I'd rather shell out $18K for a 00-01 Pathfinder.
No place I'd rather be...

Safety isn't so great either as a friend on mine found out. She ended up rolling her discovery. roof collapsed like it was nothing. Needed the jaws of life to get her out. If you REALLY want one, you'd be better off leasing one and letting the warranty deal with any problems that arrise so that your wallet doesn't have to.

Adding to the fire:

A co-worker bought a used Discovery, guiltily explaining that he needs it to haul his boat.  Yeah.  Okay.  Whatever.

When it came time for scheduled maintenance, the local Oakville outfit wanted $1300.  They're the only game in town for miles around.  He finally got a quote for $800 from the dealer in Vaughan, and chose to drive his car all the way out there (about 50 km).  In the GTA, that's like going to the ends of the earth.

It's not every day that one sees consensus on this board on what constitutes a POS vehicle with lousy service, to boot.

I think I'll go buy a lottery ticket.

There are lots of great luxury SUV's, 4Runners, Pathfinders and even Grand Cherokees.  All of these (even the Jeep) will be more durable, cheaper to buy and cheaper to maintain in the long run.  All of the above are great off-road. Some of the American-made SUV's offer great bang for the buck.  Though they depreciate quickly, the Big 3 still make decent trucks that offr good value used.  If I was in the used 4x4 market I would be looking at a Liberty, X-terra/Pathfinder or 4Runner.  I wouldn't touch a Land Rover

Do Land Rovers even make it onto any creditable list out there?  Sure they got cool magazine ads and such but I would be a bit leary of them.  I know that the old ones rock but I think the newer ones are more status symbols IMO.

Sadly they don't sell real Land Rovers in N.A.

Real Land Rovers with diesels, 4 on the floor, 2 speed transfer box and a separate forward reverse gearbox.

Having said that, an acquaintance of mine from South Africe says that people in the bush use Toyota Land Cruisers ( again, 4 on floor, diesel engine etc etc.)

Sadly again Toyota choose not to sell the Land Cruiser in Canada.... probably NOT because the bumpers are too flimsy!  most likely because it doesn't have the correct baby seat fittings.
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

Don't know how they bring them in but a neighbour around the corner restores the older ones like you describe with the Mercedes Diesel and heavy transmissions. He has 5or 6 at the moment he is doing. Strange they are all the same colour. Powder Blue Bottom with White Roof. I think maybe from the UN as it is their colours. The older ones restored sell for quite a hi-dollar in to-days market.

The killer off-roaders are the old LR 90" models, and they tried to sell the Defender 90 here, and no one bought it.  the best off-road vehicles that are used in truly difficult conditions are Mercedes G-wagons (not the plush V-8 sold here, but the no-frills diesels), the Toyota LC's, and the LR small wheelbase and longer stripped models.  The Toyota has become known as the toughest of the tough.

When I lived in the Yukon, the people that needed the toughest off-roader that could go where no one else could go found an old Toyota Land Cruiser.  The only thing was you had leave the diesel engine on all winter...

Toyota Lc’s are king in mining. I would estimate 90% of the underground personnel vehicles in North America are Toyota LC’s. In a mining operation with shaft access only the Toyotas were chopped up and slung. Mines with a surface ramp access the gear movement is easy. The only mods required were a scrubber, FOGS (fall of ground shield), and a roll cage….yes we roll vehicles over underground.

We tried Dodge, GM, and Fords at the mining operations in Flin Flon in the mid ‘90’s….spent too much time in the shop and utilization never made the cut-off. I remember ripping the cab and driveline off a Dodge mounted on a rail car during transfer….the drift (tunnel for you geeks) was too small and the mine foreman forgot to check clearances. A brand new ’94 and we chucked it into an open stope (mined out excavation which contained ore) for backfill….brining it back to surface was more expensive than buying a new one.

I've heard there is many deceased vehicles at the bottom of these mines in Canada all the way up to the large terex mining type. You guys take them down in peices and they never return to the surface again. I helped ship many Terex trucks to the mines years ago in 35,45 and 65 Ton sizes. I don't think any 150 Ton trucks went down under but might have.

A few years back at the beginning of the SUV craze, CBC interviewed a forestry guy in BC about his "suv"
1970's Land cruiser, Diesel, std transmission, oversized fuel tank, full underbody armor, 3 ton winch at each end and a very big come-along with 200 ft of cable in the back...just in case..
I remember the colours as being red, cream and dents.

Never occured to me ( as a city boy) that one would make a mine big enough to use such a vehicle underground!
