Changing Timing Belt on a Honda Civic 1998 DX Hatch?
« on: December 09, 2004, 12:30:42 am »
Hello!

I have a 98 Honda Civic DX Hatchback. It has 97k on it right now. Many of my
friends are telling me that i should get the timing belt changed.

If I do, how much would it cost approximately? And is it true in the same
time I should get also the water pump replaced because it's nearby the
timing belt? I just bought some new winter tires and would like any advice
on what I should do right now?

Can I wait until spring time before changing the timing belt? Ok, and the
timing belt: how much? how many hours for the labour?

Thanks to all responses!

Jay

If I recall, most Honda models (4 bangers) run about $250-$300 parts and labour for a timing belt change.

Honda engines are interference engines and if the belt shears or breaks, odds are you'll at least bend some valves, maybe wreck more.

Cheap peace of mind.
No place I'd rather be...

I'd say it's about time.  6 years going on 7 years for a timing belt is good.  The water pump is close and you will save on labour if you do it at the same time.....but that's your call.

Had a friend of mine with a 1988 VW 1.6L/TD shear the belt 100,582 kms, 582kms overdue for a timing belt, cost him close to $3000 to completely rebuild the motor. Had to replace the head{new}, all four pistons & rods. It really depends on your budget.

If you don't beat on the car than you can wait untill close to 110,000kms which is stated in your owners manual.  I am on my third Honda and have never changed the wpump at the same time.  If you use the HOnda premixed coolant (your first change was due at 72000kms) your water pump should be fine.  I would pass on the wpump as chances it will last the life of the car.  Labour on the t-belt without AC is 3 units/hours. You can also call the local Honda dealer for a proper quote.  I have a 96 Civic and have been thru most of this already.  Winter tires, put them on I guess.
I miss my motorcycle!

Blue definitely put the Snowtires on as it is the time to do it. Let your fingers do the walking on the timing belt and the water pump is a decision you have to make. It could last for years yet.

My waterpump died on my 93 Accord.  Fixed under warranty so I paid for the belt with no labour.

What about your engine coolant?
