Strange... we have a Mazda 3 as well, and at speeds over 80 I seem to notice some additional noise compared to the stock RS-A tires.  Not bad, but I can tell it's there...  I don't notice any kind of vibration, just a type of low frequency oscillating noise.  This is on hubcentric steelies bought from TireTrends BTW.

Other than that, the change over to the KW17 has been pretty transparent in urban driving for my parents (which is a good thing).

No chance to test it out on snow yet, but who knows since the Vancouver forecast calls for flurries by the weekend....

Snow tires are not glue....LOL. If you slam on the brakes or goose it you will experience slipping or spinning. What they do provide is predicatbility and much improved braking in cold weather. For example: If you are in an emergency situation and slam on the brakes the vehicle will stay in a straight line and stop much quicker than an AS or Summer tire. Whereas the latter will be unpredictable and the vehicle will loose control much more easily.

Brian as for the extra noise this is quite normal with a winter tire. However, winter tires currently available are much improved over previous generations. It also has a lot to do with your hearing. Tires are designed to be quiet, but there is friction and with friction comes noise. If your hearing is sensitive to this noise than they will seem louder. Hope you get a chance to test those suckers soon. They said there could be snow on Thursday. We'll see...

Hey there Mort,
I am looking at buying a set of the KW17 for my Mazda3 sport gt. I have looked at your website but it doesn't list that tire with the size 205 55 16 as an option for my car.
Is it sold out or am I missing something?

thanks from a very cold Calgary
Michelle

Holy cow, they must've run out!  Just for fun, I did the same search and all the "bargain" H-rated tires like the Hankook and Kumho are out of stock it seems.... I know they used to list them in this size.  When I bought mine a month ago the Hankooks were in "limited" quantity.

Vancouverites had their first snow of the season....it was on the news. Bet that a lot of the daily drivers went to get winter tires installed ASAP...happens every year. Glad that I don't live there anymore. At least it's warmer there.....here it will be minus 36 deg C with the windchill overnite and well into the winter season....slipping and sliding all over the ice even with a set of winter tires (unstudded :-( ) on my truck.

Installed these on the Protege 5 in October.  They are a bit noisier than the stock A/S Dunlops, but not intrusive.  During our recent snow they performed well, although I have not driven this vehicle in the snow before.  In Victoria area you have to take it easy anyways, but no surprises in snow, slush and ice.  The ABS only tried to kick in once. In the rain they handle very well.  The Dunlops would break loose and hydroplane in any type of water.  During our recent flood in Victoria, they would handle any amount of water at highway speeds and felt great.  Our daily drive includes twisty roads with reasonably high speeds.      These tires feel safe and comfortable even at 140km+.
