It's like all the airbags.  You have them.  You never want to use them.  If this design means the difference in saving a life....I'll accept it.

the next step will be pedestrian airbags...then we will have some specific points in the bumper and in the hood that will help prevent more injuries to pedestrian...the problem is that we'll have to reduce the size of the engine and underpower it...k?

and if Siraqua is right:
"Obviously this will have an impact around the globe. I don't think automakers will graft special front-ends on cars only for Europe"
I wont be buying anything that comes from Europe!

Oh c'mon Multi, not like you were planning on purchasing a European car as it is!  ;)

Benz supposedly will have an exterior airbag inflating out of the front grille on the new upcoming S-Class. Will have to see footage of how that works, and how it can possibly sense objects hitting in time to protect.

The rules call for 'X' amount of inches between the hood and the hard components of the engine (around 2-4" or something). I take it the airbag housing or what-have-you would be allowed to take up that spot (@having less space for the engine). Of course, they could just develop even more compact, harder-to-service engines and keep the height of the hood similar to what it is now.

Hmmmm... perhaps we'll see more engines like those in the old Mazda MX-3 Precidia - an ultra-compact 1.8L 128hp V6.

I think Robo-Kebab gave Jimmery the heebie-jeebies.

Jimmery, posts can only be edited in the first sixty minutes following actual posting.  I think.

And, speaking from experience as a beleaguered female member of this board, I would gently suggest that, if you're looking for respect for human dignity, this sure as hell ain't the place to find it.    I will even venture to say that you ain't seen nothing yet.

Its the Head Injury they have to work on cutting down. There has been different types of Bumpers tried and some worked very well like the ones they used on the Toronto Bus's. These were individual pockets that held a water solution with blow out plugs on the top. When they crushed someone in between another vehicle or hit them on the street the fluid took the bulk of the impact. Seen them tested many times and they did help a lot.

Yes it was as the fluid does squirt out all over the person hit and wash the drivers window as well.

At one point last night, on my computer (only??), this thread showed up on two separate lines and each was the full, identical thread. Then the second one disappeared again, so I had already posted the query. I guess I should have just erased the whole thing.
