Time to buy?
« on: December 05, 2004, 08:51:10 am »
Is it the best time of year to buy a car right now?  (easier to negotiated for a good price)

Are there such things as a Christmas Rush for car dealership?

Will I be able to get better prices now, or should I wait another month in Jan/Feb.

Thanks

From My own personal experience I like to wait until the last week of Jan as with all of the Christmas Bills coming in hardly anybody is buying a new vehicle at this time. They will have to come down or carry the vehicle into another month with the Bank. You can usually do very well at that time of year.

On used cars, the shrewd shopper can get the same deal at any time of year. Of course, everything else being equal, prices drop as time goes by.

Same on new except for specific manufacturer programs that may come and go. Up until a couple years ago, the last week of December was a very good time to buy. The last few years there hasn't been anything too spectacular during this time.

It also depends on what you are buying. A Mustang convertible will probably be a good buy in January. A Honda or Toyota dealer may say take it or leave it at any time of year.

In Edmonton, dealer traffic sinks mighty low in January.  It gets nuts-freezing cold (who likes to wander lots at -30C?) and most people have just got their Visa bill and are being given CPR, precluding them from shopping.

We bought our Subie on a cold January night, and worked a seriously good price.  You could have danced the La Bamba in the showroom, no one would have noticed, 'cause NO ONE was there.

Of course, there is a flip side too.  The sales manager's wife found out about his girlfriend and maxed his credit cards and blew their life savings on buying the 19 year old stud-muffin that lives next door a Camaro.  He needs moolah, and needs the profits to be maxed on every deal.

John - LOL - I see Edmonton hasn't changed much since I lived there in the mid-70s...Ha. Got in more trouble in that town than any other ever. I blame the brutally cold nights and lots of booze. Was fun tho.
