Newbie question: On a new car, is it normal ..
« on: December 02, 2004, 06:51:42 pm »
Is it normal to have a few kms (about 70-80) on a brand new car ? The dealer says the car had to be driven in from another location close to the city, and hence the kms. Should I be weary of anything here ?

That sounds fairly normal.  It might have been test driven as well, but 70-80km they didn't go too far.

You should be wary of the dealer's car jockey, who likely drove it in from another location at 160kph with total disregard to break-in recommendations. I grit my teeth when I am being passed at high speed by some bozo in a brand new car with dealerplates.

It's not unheard of.  But like it was said earlier, you don't know how it was driven in those 80km.

It's fairly normal but if it bothers you, you could refuse the car and ask for one w less than 10kms on it. There's always a few just losding and unloading it. No biggie to me.

Mine had over 200km on it and I almost backed out of the deal. The problem was, I had few to choose from and couldn't stand to wait ~6 months for a 2005. Nothing wrong so far but it still bothers me to think about it. Just imagining how someone may have treated "My Precious." Like Ovr says: "...if it bothers you, you could refuse the car and ask for one w less than 10kms on it."

You could be weary and walk the 80K to pick it up at the other dealer...

You guys are being sucks...break-in is not the big deal it once was...according to well placed insiders within major auto manufacturers, most engines are broken in after about 10km. The break-in remains in the owners manual for legal liability reasons....I personally find that cars/bikes perform better when they have the snot wrung out of them when brand new.  I had 3km on my car when it hit redline for the first time...never a problem...hitting redline, winding out an engine is not a problem.  Staying at high RPM's for a consistent period of time...that's where the burn occurs (hence racing wearing out engines).  Just an opinion but I wouldn't worry.  Sometimes it's not even the lot jockey's that drive the cars around.  I know LOTS of Dealer Principals who might drive a car to a dealer on their way to an auction, stop in shoot the s*it then head over...just an opinion but I wouldn't be concerned in the least.  BTW 2005 invoices are in ;)

My "Precious" is a 2005 Civic SE. The dealer didn't have what I wanted and I couldnt stand to wait too long for it. I guess 70 kms is not a big deal...... or is it ? ;)

Welcome back EAX!  It's been quite a while

This website has been posted before and I think its a good opportunity to bring it out again in relation to EAX' comments about break-in period:

Mine had 42kms. It was out front by the showroom door when I stopped on the way back from a trip to Montreal, so I figure it was used to do an errand or two (still had interior wrap, so wouldn't have been a demo), but looked fine and at the time I bought I was told there were 3 in the country in the spec I wanted, so I was happy to take it.

I worry about break-in time. New engines still need to be broken-in, but not to the same extend they once did. I varied my speed, didn't jackrabbit start or excessively revv.

With 80kms, if it looks good and sounds right, I wouldn't worry too much about it.
