GM's Extended warranty
« on: November 30, 2004, 10:06:21 pm »
Am considering buying a 2004 Impala that is off rental. Price is quite good and this dealer has offered the best price for my trade in by $2000. over about 4 other dealers I approached. Price for trade has not been inflated as I negotiated the trade price after pricing a new 04 impala.

I am concerned about the 3 yr 60K standard warranty and am considering buying say a 48 or 60 month 100K either full or just the power train. Anyone got any thoughts, does GM give you a hard time getting things put through. I believe the full warranty is about $200 more than the stand alone power train one. These are pricy but if the deal on the car is good the peace of mind and potential increase trade value might be worth it.

if you are getting a good deal and you're sure that u like the car i would recommend the extended warranty (but not only powertrain) which will be a plus on this car.

If it's only $200 more, I would certainly go for it on the entire package. Worth it for your peace of mind. Just my opinion.

The extra warranty (to create a full warranty) for $200 is an extended warranty offered by a third party (?) and thus not the dealer's responsibility? Is this right or am I unknowingly thinking of something else?

I wouldnt waste the money on the extra warranty. I assume your looking at $1500 - $2000. For that price you wll be able to pay for most problems that would occur...I've bought 3 ex rental cars...a 85 monte carlo, 97 grand prix, 2000 grand am....with no extra warranty and no major problems..the funny thing is, its after the extended warranty period is over is when a problem will occur.."that piece of mind motoring" is what the business manager is counting on.
its your money, why dont u keep it ?

No. He said a full warranty was $200 more than a powertrain warranty.

My first post probably wasn't clear enough. The extended warranty will cost about $1500 - $1700 depending on whether it is full or just power train.

I understand the thought process from Bitme but I just got a quote on what it would cost to solve a tranny problem in my present car an 01 Intrigue. Minimum 4 hrs labour and possibly more. Tranny shop suggested it would cost anywhere from $600-1400.

This off rental Impala has 28000k and based on my drivng pattern would be out of warranty in about another 12-14 months.

I considered staying with the Intrigue and fixing it. The tranny should be covered under the present warranty if they can get it to happen in the shop but they fixed a similar problem last winter and it has resurfaced again. Presently 97000k and I will put it out of warranty in about 3 weeks. With Xmas coming I don't need the agravation of having to take the car in and leaving it overnight so the shop can get the problem to occur. What happens is it will not go into gear until the car warms up on cold mornings but it doesn't happen every time. Last year I dropped it off about 5 times before it did it for the dealer to see.  It also has other problems. Needs tires and a lot of minor maintenance stuff but they all add up. A problem that I and the dealer cannot figure out is the car loses all power and dies then restarts okay. So far it has only happened on non highway situations. Time in the shop while they try to isolate the problems is also a factor.

I should probably just buy a Camry or even a new Impala  but it will cost me about $23 grand plus my car for the Camry. I could get a new 04 Impala for my car and about $18000. The one I'm looking at will be about $12000 with the extended warranty purchase.

If you can afford either the new Camry or the new Impala, it might be better than the gamble on the ex-rental or the gamble on your present Intrigue (which have had their share of problems also). If fact, if you can afford new, do that. My opinion.

Be prepared for a stressful argument with your dealer when claiming for EXTENDED warranty repairs!

A close family friend bought extended warranty for his Chevy Venture.  Regular warranty has lapsed and extended warranty was in effect when he had problems with the van. He took it to GM Goodwrench and they happily serviced the van, knowing that it's under extended warranty.  When it's time to pick-up the van, they wouldn't release it till he pays $800!  Based on the fine print, their extended warranty claims are valid. They had a very long argument about it and he had to bring in reinforcement... his wife! Then later after more arguments ensued, the service agreed to release the van for 0 dollars.

From that day on, they've become anti-extended warranty anadvocates, telling friends and relatives to think twice about it.

I had an extended warranty for a year on this Blazer. The first thing that went wrong (the day after I took it home)....not covered. The second thing....nope. Third.....nada.

They can take their extended warranty and shove it in their tailpipe.

Everyone hates us until they need us.

I never buy the extended warranty plans from anybody. I rarely keep a vehicle beyond 80k or 4 years so there is no point. I remember the Toyota dealer in Sudbury giving me the sales pitch on their version…..I said “if you keep this up I’m going across the street to lease a Pilot

Good response Snowy. The extra warranties are mainly money makers and like all "Insurance" the many pay for the few.Unless you have zero tolerance for RISK..pass them by; the odds are in your favour at this Casino gamble.

How are the Highlander & RutRo's standings in the Vaillancourt stable...time to be put out to stud or doped up to 400H.P..????
THERE IS NO CURE FOR "LOTUS"......ONLY TREATMENT.....

Rut Ro is at 68k and I have just 22 months left on the lease. At the current rate of driving I will hit 125k at lease end and be 25k over. I will owe Subaru $1500. I have two options I am considering.

1- Trade in prior to lease end in the summer of 2006 for a LGT.
2- Buyout Rut Ro and keep as a daily driver and lease new summer toy.

The Maytag has 72 k on the clock and is due back in 16 months. We will be close on the kilometers, but not enough to be a concern when we turn it in. The Highlander is retain it’s value and we will probably trade it in next fall for a Volvo Wagon of some type Wiffy is on a Volvo lick and spotted a 2005 V50 T5 AWD and said “I want that one….can we get it for $650/monthâ€?

Exactly, they wouldn't sell them if they weren't moneymakers for them.
